The trick to cleaning the carburetor is to use a carburetor cleaner and wire out the main tube or emulsion tube that feeds fuel to the engine. I always recommend putting a carburetor kit into the engine for safety.

Contact a company like www.arcolawn.com and make sure a briggs and stratton part # 498260 will fit your machine and have it shipped asap to get the job done. Good luck

Getting a mower out of its winter slumber takes some time. Start with fresh gas, new oil, and air filter. Sometimes carbs get gummed up(varnisized gas). Donyboy73 on youtube shows how to remove Briggs n Stratton in tank carb systems and clean the parts and passages.

I have an old Craftsman 286707 riding lawn mower that will turn over but not start - ideas of where to look - it worked fine 4 days ago for the first time this season but took about 5 tries

Did you have gas in it over the winter? I would try some starting fluid and see if its fuel related or something else.. If it will run with a little starting fluid for a minute then you have some kind of fuel issue.. Gas with ethanol blend is bad for carbs over the winter. .. I would use some really good fuel stabilizer once you get it working again.

Hi it sound like a blocked jet in the carb, petrol crystallizes when left over winter time, it blocks the holes in the fuel jet, when you come to use it again next summer, best thing is to drain all the fuel/petrol from the float chamber in the carb over winter time. TO FIX IT you can strip the carb down and clean the restricted holes with a needle or fine wire to clear the blockage.if they've become blocked.

My Mower won't start for more than 8 sec. I changed the spark plug, gas, oil, etc. I cleaned it inside and out including the carb. left in rain for 5 min accedentaly, cleaned, na da. Help. Thanks Craftsman...

the problem is that your carbeurator is gummed from from sitting idle all winter with gas in it. Get an aerosol can of carbeurator cleaner, remove the air filter and give the air intake two squirts of carb. cleaner. Then start the mower. When it stalls again let it sit for an hour while the carbeurator cleaner works at dissolving some of that gum. Repeat the process until the mower runs again. Sometimes there is so much junk in the carb. that you have to remove it and soak it in cleaner for about three hours, and then rebuild the carb. with the proper little kit. hopefully you won't have to take this step.

Next fall let the mower run out of gas and stall then you won't have the gum in the carbeurator in the spring.
