Question about John Deere 22HP Hydrostatic 42" Riding Mower
Check the seat switch ,it has an auto kill seat switch that if a little out of adjustment then it wont do anything. When you messed with the battery area you probalby messed up the switch unvoluntarily. Check that Check the voltage(12 volts DC) to the switch(start)and back ,its there you can find it

If you have NO power showing on the dash then I would say it is the solinoid. Simple to change. Has 2 prongs and two bolts one of the bolts attach to the positive battery cable the other to the starter cable. It is secured to the mower body with 2 bolts also. Takes maybe 5 minutes to change. Make sure you disconnect the positive battery cable before working on your mower.
