Question about Briggs Stratton IC Horizontal OHV Engine 305cc 1450 Series 145 Gross Torque 1in x 3 2132in Shaft Model 2053320537B1

Open Question

Briggs & stratton ic ohv 14.5hp model 287707 bought used started and it dumped oil in carb and exhaust. was overfilled with oil, drained, cleaned plug. turned engine over with plug out, cleaned filter and carb, didn't remove bowl. started and burned off oil in muffler. now starts good but surges rpms, runs smooth at idle, sputters when throttled up, runs best when fully choked, checked for air leaks and put gasket sealer on carb body gaskets, still surging in mid range rpms. sometimes backfires. ????

I only put gasket sealer on the plastic housing gaskets but your suggestion for removing the bowl and cleaning the jets and passages worked. Mower running like a top at all speeds. Thanks for the info !! Bob

SOURCE: Craftsman 42in. riding lawn mower

Hi amd welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
One of the things that can cause this problem is a low oil level sensor that is dirty of has beeen activated from an actual low oil level. Check the oil level to make sure it is full. Check spark... with crankcase fully serviced. Still no spark disconnect ONE wire from the low oil level sensor and test spark.
After this you will be looking at the black wire from the magneto to the ignition switch or throttle control plate. (FYI it also goes to the low oil level sensor.... start looking for shorts in the wire!) A bad magneto or igniton unit will also cause this sympton.

Parts list:

Service manual OHV:
IC engine

Either way there is most likely a ground on the magneto primary wire or the magneto itself has failed. Do not change the magneto until your sure there are not any grounds on the wire leading to the magneto.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Stills sounds like a carb problem to me. Did you make sure all the jets were clean and open? Some of these carbs have a main jet adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb, if yours does try opening it up a 1/4 turn at a time to richen the fuel mixture until it runs properly.

I have a Briggs stratton 14 hp ohv I/c quiet model 287707. I had a guy change the oil & he put 10W30 synthetic oil in it. Now it smokes white smoke really bad. I think he put the wrong oil in

There is a very real difference between 30W and 10W30 oil. Whether it's synthetic or not probably doesn't matter. If you have the literature that came with the mower, it will tell you the recommended engine oil.
If they put in the wrong oil, they should make it right. You shouldn't have to pay twice for an oil change. It could be burning oil, since 10W30 is a lower viscosity than 30W. I would have them change it again, and see if it stops smoking.

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

I have a b/s intec ohv 13 hp oil has gas in it ,oil would fly out the exhaust. I drained the oil out and much gas is evident. Engine has good compression. Oil was squeaking out in late summer and i...

If you have that much gas in your oil it's usually because the float valve in the carburator is stuck open. This allows gas to overfill the carb, it then goes to the cylinder and is thin enough to get by the rings and into the crankcase. It could be because there is something in the valve seat keeping it from closing or the float could be damaged.

What kind of oil does the 22 hp briggs stratton take

from briggs site:
For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50 hours of use (whichever comes first).
  • Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines.
  • Check oil level regularly.
  • Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per hour.
  • Fill to mark on dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL.
