My computer doesn't see mic when I plug in to the jack

First, did you plug in the microphone when the computer was off or not? If you connected the microphone while the computer was on, it may not have seen the new device to load the drivers. If the computer found the microphone when it was turned on, then the problem could be driver or hardware related.

You need to make sure that the computer is seeing this as the recording device. Click Start and select Control Panel from the right hand column. Click on the Hardware and Sound link. Select the Manage Audio Devices link under Sound. Click on the Recording tab. Is the microphone listed as plugged in? If it isn't, then the microphone isn't making good contact with the jack, has a bad wire or the jack isn't working. If you have another computer, check if the microphone works on it. That will rule out the microphone being faulty. Next go back to the starting Hardware and Sound Control Panel. Look for the link to the Device Manager under Devices. Expand the section for audio inputs and outputs. Check for a red triangle with an x or yellow triangle with an exclamation point. This indicates a problem with the audio drivers. Check with Toshiba for the audio drivers for your computer and the current service pack for Vista. You may need to uninstall the current driver and then reinstall that driver. A final option may be to check if the external audio input was disabled in the BIOS. When you turn on the computer, you should see a screen that tells you how to access the BIOS. (Usually this is F1, Esc, Del or F2). I find pressing the appropriate key repeatedly after turning on the computer doesn't always work. If you get to the Windows splash screen, turn off the computer at the login screen and try again.

If the microphone is plugged in, set it as the default device. You should be able to record with your software.

If the microphone still doesn't work with this computer and does work with another machine, you will probably be better off using a USB microphone or a USB audio adapter (USB to 3.5 mm microphone and speaker jacks). The wiring of the jack is probably faulty and it's not worth the effort to repair.

I hope this helps.

Sir myheadphone and microphone jack is not working

Hi,

I am assuming that the internal speaker (and microphone if present) is/are working. If so then it could possibly be:
  • the jacks themselves; and/or
  • the wiring.
  • alternately, the plugs might just be inserted in the wrong jack, pls verify.
If the internal speakers work, then presumably the drivers/software are correctly installed making this a hardware problem. This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Microphone Not Working!

If this is a microphone that connects to the 3.5 mm microphone jack, check that your microphone is connected to the Mic port (pink on the rear of a desktop). Make sure that the plug is fully seated. If you are using a front microphone jack on a desktop, try using the rear port (or vice versa). Next, if you have Windows, check that the audio input is set to Microphone, instead of Line In. (For Windows 7, this would be Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Devices (under Sound) and the recording tab.) Microphone should be your default device.

Next try uninstalling the audio driver and letting Windows reinstall the driver. Use the Device Manager (under Devices and Printers in the Hardware and Sound Control Panel). Expand the section labeled Sound, video and game controllers. Then right click on the Audio driver. Click on Uninstall then reboot the computer after the driver is removed. The correct driver should be reinstalled. (I believe that you do not have a separate driver for the microphone under Windows but you should make certain of that.) Check for driver updates as well. The Windows Update may list these as Optional updates.

If you have a USB microphone, try a different port. Also check for drivers from the manufacturer.

If you have an Apple or Unix OS, check for similar issues with the connection or drivers.

I hope this helps.

(who had a similar problem with Audacity recording on the line in port last month; I fixed the problem by uninstalling the audio driver and then reinstalling it. Then changing the Recording Source to Line In finished the fix. The driver got changed by a computer tune-up utility (registry cleaner).)

Sony vaio vgn-cs215j not work microphone let me help please.

Hi,

This will happen if the Microphone in the Computer is not enabled or if the Audio Driver is not installed correctly.

To make sure that you have enabled the Microphone in the computer, please right click on the Sound icon on the System Tray (right corner of the taskbar). Then, select the "Recording Devices" option. This will open the Sound Properties window. In the Speaker/Headphones Properties window, click on the Levels tab. Then, on the Levels tab, next to Microphone , click on the speaker button to enable the microphone. After that click the OK button and close the open windows. This will enable the Microphone in the Computer.

If the issue still persists, you may need to re-install the Audio Driver in the computer to fix it.

To download the Audio Driver for the Computer, click here

Please download the file to a temporary folder in the Computer. After that, please open the folder where the file is downloaded and double click on it to begin the installation. Please follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation process. After that, restart the Computer for the settings to take the effect. Re-installing the Audio Driver also fixes the issue with the Microphone. Hope this helps..

Good luck..!

Sir , I hv a compaq presario c700 product with KU764PA Product no . m using window vista OS. Sir I m not able to use My Inbuilt or extension Microphone..Watz the Problem..Plz sugges me wat to do ? I m not...

Go here to get the updated audio driver:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-64867-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&product=3694963&os=2093&lang=en

Once you are on that website, Click and download the file named: SP40762.EXE

When you have dowloaded to the file to your pc, double click on it and it will install the new drivers.

If this doesnt work it might be because your microphone is either turned off or turned down in the sound control section.

To get there:

Click start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound

Then select the Recording Tab

Double click the microphone icon

On the page titled "General"
Device usage should be set to "use this device (enable)"

The next page to check is "levels"
Make sure "Microphone" has about 90 to 100 next to it

Click apply and ok to exit.

Reboot your pc and check for sound..

I hope that helps.

If it does, please rate me.

Cheers

Mike

Just plug it into the mic input on the sound card. All recent operating systems support it by default.
