Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Fisher & Paykel DEIX2 (electric) dryer -- squeaking The F&P (4 years old) has a squaking that occurs when the drum is rotating. It was intermittent and is now continuous. I'm handy, but I'm not seeing the straightforward way to get to the area where the bearings are. Actually, I haven't pulled the unit out of the closet & really broken it down -- I've pulled the front off, though. I think the problem is in the side where the heat enters the drum, but would like your response to address both sides. I must warn people to get in the front every year or two and vacuum out the lint that gets past the filter. I was shocked.

What a cool design inside this model. Pull the top off -- two screws and free a wire, Pull the front panel off (2 screws). And you can then roll the entire drum-motor system forward onto the front and get at the motor-belt tensioner system. A little gentle force and you can take off the Y-shaped part off that holds both tensioner-idler rollers. They were both gummed up with burnt lubricant, and the "axles" were both abraded on one side, though they could both still be turned though with much difficulty.

In my case, the entire problem was caused by the fact that the black closed-cell foam seal where exhaust and lint exits the system had broken away on one of the four sides. This allowed tons of lint and fine sand to settle all over the inside of my machine, including on the axles of those two idler-tensioner rollers. Add a little lint and you've got yourself some pretty sticky lubricant. Slow-turning, sticky and burnt makes for squeaking noises, I guess.

Now I just need to get a new foam seal and maybe some lubricant for the bushings and shafts I've cleaned up (and smoothed with 800 grit). If there were a flat spot, I'd replace the assemblies, and might anyway if they're not too pricey.

Why does the dryer squeak and grind as the drum turns?

Hi Karen
Your problem is that the drum rollers are in need of lubrication or replacement, that is what is making the noise you hear.

The model of my Fisher Paykel dryer is DEIX2 and it runs but doesn't get hot. It's four years old. Would it be cheaper to replace than repair? Thanks.

Hi,

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

Try turning it on while holding the door switch and give the drum a spin. If it starts you will need a motor if it does nothing then look for a solenoid.
