The projector basically takes what looks like a screenshot of the desktop and projects that and only that - but only if I don't have the usb connector attached. I am using the correct adaptor.

Hello, try pressing the button marked "AUTO SETUP" on top of the projector.
That will usually solve this problem.

Have you looked carefully at the ends of the S video cable? If one pin is bent or missing, I would think you might get this message.

Make sure the InFocus is switched on when you do the prefrences or the setting wont stick, also can you select inputs on the projector? ours was a pain as is was set to vga and I had to guess and use the remote to switch it.

I neen help seting up my infocus sp777 calibration and problems with ps3 and sky hd do you no any one in milton keynes who can help ?

Try setting the output of the PS3 to 720p or 1080i
And if your not using the component video on the 4805 try that. If you are using an HDMI to M1-D adapter make sure it is HDCP compatible. (P&D)

Infocus projector connected to Toshiba laptop

The sequence is fn first then f5 simultaneously then release. However the problem may be the resolution setting on your computer's 2nd monitor output may be out of range (too High) for the 4805 Start with 1024X768 and see if that works.

Reversing the picture on the monitor

Here is the manual:
ScreenPlay 4805 ScreenPlay 4805
Check page 38 on picture settings, you can revers the image to project from behind a screen (mirror), I don' think you can have picture upside down (180 rotation) using projector settings. You need to reverse image source (eg. picture on computer).
