I take it you have no CD inserted here?Try the factory re-set. Behind the face off with the face removed insert a pen or dart point into the re-set hole, bottom rightish of the unit.
If protect shows and you can get nothing from the unit, then it will be this? Speaker cable or connector short. Check to be sure the terminals of the speaker leads are covered with insulating tape properly, then reset the unit.

Display says Protect , and the unit does not start.

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

My camera says "write protect" and dont know how

Look at your memory card. SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Picture has a sideways "key" on it and won't erase. I have an Olympus FE-210, how do I get rid of the "key" and am then able to erase the picture?

On page 22 of your user manual it talks about protecting images. Looks like you go to playback menu use the arrow keys to select the locked image - then press up or down arrow to remove the key symbol fromt he image by selecting ON or OFF.
