Question about Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop

2 Answers

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, which has a locked BIOS. Dell have been unable to redolve this problem (the security codes didn't work) If I replace the MB myself, will the security still be active for the HDD and optical drive? Or will I need to replace them too?

If the hard disk is not password protected then you can use it on the new motherboard. The optical drive would be OK on the new motherboard.

In my past experience, motherboard passwords haven't locked access to the HDD or ODD. They have just limited the motherboard from accessing these things. So by replacing the mobo you should be okay as there would no longer be any restriction on these devices.

As a side note, most Dell laptops offer access to the the CMOS battery. If you can access and remove that, you may be able to reset the password without ordering a new battery. Assuming Dell didn't already suggest that, and assuming you can access yours.

How to reset dell inspiron 1525 bios password

A laptop BIOS password is more secure than a traditional desktop to help protect the data if it was stolen. If you are the original owner of the laptop, I recommend contacting the manufacturer of the laptop. Companies such as Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba can reset the password if you are the original owner using the Service Tag, disk, or give you exact steps for your laptop.

The best solution for a lost password on a BIOS lock is to call Dell Technical Support and give them that System # number. They can use it to provide the unlock code... After they validate your ownership of the laptop.

My computer is locked in the BIOS Setting

I assume you have already tried the Dell site & searched (using eg google) for 'Inspiron 8600 BIOS reset' so I'll not bother repeating your efforts.

Since you posted here, I can only assume you have been unable to find any information about special power-on key combinations or any small holes underneath (where a paperclip can be used to reset the BIOS) ... in which case your only option is to dismantle the laptop, locate the BIOS battery and remove it for 30 seconds or so.

To find out how to dismantle the laptop, search (google) for 'Inspiron 8600 BIOS Battery replacement' ....
