If it's brand new, you probably need to initialize it. On your Windows PC (as I'm not familiar with mac's) right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" depending on what version of Win you use. Then click manage, and find "Disk Management" on the left side. If you see any drives that aren't typically there, right click on it. One of the options should be to initialize the disk. Hopefully this helps!

Can't drag photos from my Mac to an external WD hard drive?

The drive would have to be formatted in order for the mac to use it. Then you'd lose all your photos. The drive can either work on the PC or work on the Mac. They are two different animals.

Hi there I have formatted my 1TB Western for a MAC but cannot transfer data to a HP... How do I reformat so that it is compatible with all computers please? Can I do this without deleting/removing...

If you format it for a PC, both the MAC and PC should be able to read it.
If not, there is a product called MACDrive that you can put on your PC that will allow you to read MAC formatted disks on your PC.

Thanks for your email. The Western Digital WD Passport comes formatted for a PC, so it does require that you format the drive so that the Mac can recognize it. First, open Disk Utility with the drive connected and running. Then, choose the drive on the left side, then choose the Partition Tab. Change the Current Partition to one, or the number of partitions you would like, then click Options. Here you will change the Partition Map Scheme to GUID, then click OK. Then in the Format Menu drop down choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click Apply and OK. Your drive will now be formatted for a Mac. To format the drive for cross-platform use, make sure that you have backed up all your data from the drive as formatting will destroy any data on the drive. First, connect the drive to your Mac, and open Disk Utility. Then select your drive on the left side of the window and choose the Partition Tab. Then change the Current Partition drop-down menu to 1 partition and click on the Options button. A new window will appear where you will choose Master Boot Record (MBR), then click OK. Then choose Free Space from the Format drop-down menu, click Apply, then OK. Your drive will now appear unformatted. Then choose the Erase tab, choose FAT32 as the Format, name your drive (you will be limited to 11 characters), and click Erase, then OK. Your drive will then appear on the desktop formatted for cross-platform use, and you can copy the data you need to move to your PC and then connect the drive to your PC. If formatting is not an option, the you can buy a program such as MacDrive that will allow your PC to read and write Mac OS files.

My WD hard drive is formatted for a mac, and when I plug it into a PC the computer doesn't even recognise the hard drive in My Computer (so I am unable to even open it). I understand that WD's are not...

The MAC can see and copy data on a hard drive that has been formatted on a PC.
You need to format the Western Digital hard drive in FAT32 using a PC, then you can exchange data between a MAC and a PC.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

2000 or XP does not see Western Digital 160 GB Ide

Seems that the Hard disk is formatted with MAC format and not Dos/Windows.

Connect the hard disk to Mac machine and check the type of filesystem of drives. If they are not NTFS/FAT then it will not be read by windows operating systems.

You need to format the drives with FAT32 or NTFS to get it read by Windows OS, you can do this in MAC machine as well.

Hope it resolves your issue.
