Question about Zenith SY2568S TV

1 Answer

I have a Zenith SY2568S, and there is no red. Plenty of green and blue. I don't know a thing about TV repair, but would like to learn. Please take me step-by-step through the process to diagnose and/or fix the problem. Thank you very much for your time. --Paul Powell

Okay, went out and got a digital multimeter from Home Depot yesterday for $20. (I may be able to use it in the future for other projects, so no problem.) I got the back of the set removed, but I have no clue what's what. Would you like me to take pictures and upload them, or can you help me without the aid of pictures?

If pictures would help, where can I upload them?

I took pictures of the circuitry board (top and bottom), and of the CRT Neck board, but how do I attach them? Do you have an email address I can send them to?

  • ppowell64 Mar 31, 2011

Okay, I hope these pictures work for you. If you need more detail in a specific area, let me know. Here is where my pictures are located:

I can't read what you wrote in your captions in the picture.

  • ppowell64 Apr 01, 2011

Okay, looks like we found our problem. :) I first measured all the resistors. All of them were 12k ohms. I then pulled out the red and green transistors. I can't remember which setting I had on the multimeter to check, but when I used it and checked the "green" transistor, it read (I think) 25.4 When I checked the "red" transistor, it read 0.2.

So, it looks like the remaining challenge is to find a C5147 transistor and replace it into the TV. :) Although it was easy enough to un-solder, it may be more of a challenge to re-solder. Any suggestions for that step?

  • ppowell64 Apr 01, 2011

All the pictures I tried to re-take of this came out either blurry or dark. I sketched this whole schematic (minus the color of the circuitry on the board), but it looks like we (most likely) already found the problem. :) (red transistor appears to be bad) :)

  • ppowell64 Apr 02, 2011

Yes, Mr. Villanueva helped me through every step of the problem. Every question I had, he answered thoroughly. I was quite impressed with his enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge. Thank you so much for your help! :)

  • ppowell64 Apr 06, 2011

Okay, just as a test, I tried putting the good transistor into the red transistor's spot. I didn't actually solder it into place, just merely unsoldered the holes, and just plugged in the transistor. When I plugged the TV back in, it was solid red with some white stripes. I thought I'd just take out the transistor, but when I did, it remained solid red.

Am I to assume that, because I didn't solder it back in, the red connection is now solidly on?

At the very least, I know that the red for sure works! ;)

One more question that the soldering video didn't address. Is there a specific compound of solder that I should be using? Is there a specific one that works best for TV's, or would just any solder wire work? Thank you so much for your help.

  • ppowell64 Apr 06, 2011

FYI, I'm just waiting for a shipment of good transistors to arrive (I ordered more than I need, just in case... and besides that, they're just 80 cents each. ;)

Hi Paul,

This is problem is in the CRT neck board. CRT Picture tube has 3 color gun (Red, Blue, and Green) and drives by 3 color amplifier transistors(identical in the neck board). It has also a resistors. Each gun has an identical circuitry (means you have 3 identical circuitry in the neck board.

Since you are missing the red color, it is an indication of dead red circuitry. Most common problem there is a bad solder joints, shorted/open driver transistor. You can fix it yourself because you have a guide through a working parts(green and blue). You must have a multimeter to compare the reading of the parts. You may also swap the identical parts, once swap the faulty one the symptom will reverse (if swap to blue, you will have no blue color now).

Worst case cenario is faulty picture tube....

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

RED TEXT : you have 3 identical transistor(R,G,B drive) pullo-out this transistor and then compare the reading. Note that we've suspected only one faulty parts meaning that you will have 2 good transistor if ever the fault is came from this parts. Ensure the facing of the transistor upon installing.

    Jdvillanueva Mar 31, 2011

BLUE TEXT: you have also 3 identical resistor same value (12,000 ohms or 12k ohms), check the resistance of this resistors even in the board.

hi, don't try the transistor without soldering it properly in the board, it may damaged because the working voltage is 180vdc which may caused a spark if the joints is not intact.

I'm using Hosiden brand of soldering lead grade 60/40 (flux 2.0) which is excellent. I don't know if this is available in your country but if not just buy same grade and flux content. No need to used soldering paste if you used this kind of lead.

I have Zenith rear projection TV Model IQC60H95W.The blue tube does not work. The red and green project. Is this a bulb or tube and are they available to purchase? The TV was made in 2001

This is a CRT(cathode ray tube) not a bulb. A Bulb is totally different. If you replace one Tube, you need to replace all 3 or the colors will never match properly. However, This model no longer has parts available. Even if they were, the cost would be close to $1000 in parts. I would not recommend repairing this TV.

If i buy a universal remote control for a replacement for the original of the zenith 1996 model sy2568s tv, will it work?

I should. Universal remote codes to check with Zenith are: 0121 0009 0050 0078 0091 0138 0059 0131 0038 0111 0134 0153 0064 0004 0135 0226 0227 0245 0247 0252 0266 0288 0310 0338 0358 0023 0058 0039 0001
Direct Code Entry
  1. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red indicator stays on, then release the SETUP button.
  2. Press and release the desired Mode button (TV, VCR, etc.). The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.
  3. Enter the 4 digit code from the code tables. Note: after a valid code entry, the red indicator turns off. For an invalid code, the red indicator flashes.
  4. With your device on, press CHANNEL UP. If the device responds, no further programming is required. Note: If some buttons do not operate your device, try one of the other codes for your brand.

Zenith Problem

It would help to know what the initial symptoms were. Or did the set just die with the result as you posted? In any case, first go over all of the boards and resolder any connections that appear grainy or have rings. That is the best way to start. Check the set after that to see if there were any changes. That should eliminate any bad connections as a problem. Next look for any burned or charred areas. Those are the areas where components can change values and cause problems.
Let us kow what you find so far.
