What do you mean by "The Setup"? Is windows not installed yet?
Or do you mean the password for logging into windows as a user?

Try to reset the BIOS using the CMOS reset jumper or by removing the BIOS battery for 30 seconds. (system will not be powered during this period)

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If thishelps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonialfor my response.

Bio's Password reset for gateway 98 desktop

BIOS passwords can be reset or removed in two ways:

1. using software 2. using hardware.

1. Software removal method - Here are two software apps to reset or retrieve BIOS passwords.

!BIOS - is a PC BIOS toolkit offering password removal/decrypt and BIOS settings modification/backup/restore.
You can download it here:
http://www.syschat.com/download120.html&act=down

CmosPwd - Cmos password recovery tools
http://majorgeeks.com/CmosPwd_d239.html

You will need to create a bootable Dos, or Linux or NT cd in order to run them.

2. Hardware Removal method :
- First you need to open the case.
- Then find the cmos battery (It will look like a nickel sized silver disk located on the motherboard).
- Remove the cmos battery for 30 seconds and then put it back in. You may have to tweak the bios settings afterward, but the password will be gone.

Good Luck!

When I start my computer, a power-on Password box shows up with a key symbol. I have never set one.

If you bought the machine second hand that would explain it, if the cmos battery is drained the computer will go back to the original setting asking you for the password. The problem is this most likely is bios password locked.

I have a Gateway computer running Win98 that prompts me for a password at startup. It didn't use to do this, so I don't know what password it is asking for. Never used one! It is doing this after a power...

Somehow, the motherboard thinks that a "start-up" password is required.

If you have a desktop computer, turn the computer off, open the case, and look on the motherboard. Look for three pins (labelled 1, 2, and 3), and look for a small "jumper" that is connecting pin 1 to pin 2. Move the jumper to connect pin 2 to pin 3. Wait 5 seconds.
Move the jumper back to connect pin 1 to pin 2.
Turn the computer on -- the "BIOS-password" will have been removed.

How do i make my gateway router secured?

Logon to your router by entering the address 192.168.1.1. in your browser search line. It should prompt you for a id and password. Enter admin in both boxes.

Go to page 25 of the manual and follow the instructions http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8509439.pdf

I am having trouble finding the WAP key for my computer. I just bought a laptop and it can detect the LAN connection but needs the WAP key. I am looking on our desktop but having trouble finding it. How do...

I guess you meant the Security Key for the wireless. You need to manually set the encryption type and key in order to connect.
When connected to the Wireless router with a cable, open up command prompt (Start->Run...->cmd [OK]), type ipconfig and note the IP address of the Gateway.
Copy paste this Gateway IP Address into IE and [Go]. you'll be prompted to logon. Try defaults if you don't know (Admin, Admin or Admin, password).
Then depends on the model of the Wireless router you need to locate settings for the wireless connection. Recommands WPA-PSK 2, AES.

How to set up password for the router

Hi,

You should connect your computer to the router with an ethernet cord.

1.Click on Start - accessories - command prompt.

2. On the command prompt, type ipconfig look for the default gateway. Take note of the number found in default gateway.

3. Open Internet Explorer then type the number from the default gateway in the address bar.

A window will pop up and will ask for he username and password. By default, username: admin sometimes they leave it as blank and the password: password sometimes it uses admin as the password.

Keep me posted.

My wireless network is unsecured

Check the default gateway address (router's address). Go to start>run. Type cmd and hit ok. In the command prompt. Type ipconfig. Take note of the default gateway address under the wireless section and type it in the address bar of internet explorer. It should take you to your router's settings page. If it asks for a password. Let me know the model of your wireless router.

D-Link Wireless router

Assuming you ahve windows XP or a lower version of windows installed
Click on start >> RUN >> type CMD
In the command prompt box type IPCONFIG. You'll get the ip address and default gateway. Note the default gateway. Open Internet Explorer and type the default gateway in the address bar and hit enter. you'll be prompted for a user name and password. Check router documentation for a default login name and password. Browse through the option to set the password. Would be hepful if you give the operating system and router model name.
