Barbara, is your windows uptodate? If not, update it. Then check drivers if uptodate. If not, download DriverMAX free and scan. I had a realtek message relating to driver.

You must uninstall the utilities on your W. 7 sometimes this program are NOT compatibles, and Install Cookies dangerous, Virus, malware tracking the computer. Go to control panel see add/remove and proceed.
After that go again to control panel, use the utility coming with your computer "System restore" and use the last date that you know was working Good , and fix it.
However you must RUN THE ANTIVIRUS+ANTIMALWARE VERY IMPORTANT+RUN the utilityes disk fix it with your comuter go to my computer hit the local disk c or d: click the properties go to tab tools and ready.

PC Model#Gateway mfatxnin das 300x ...Something

ok you need to goto the microsoft web page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

but unfortunatly you need a xp disk to do this
i am unaware of anyway to fix it without the disk as you need to rewrite from the disk to get windows working
if it was an oem install then forget it you need the oem disk
if YOU installed xp just get a disk that is compatable with your version

(PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS ON MS PAGE FIRST)

DVD Drive Booting

You said you've already done it, but just check your BIOS again to make sure the DVD drive is the first bootable device. You can usually find this by pressing DEL as soon as the computer starts up, then searching for "Boot Order", usually found under an "Advanced Options" menu in the BIOS. Of course, this differs between every manufacturer and model.

If you can't find it, or it's set to the DVD drive, there's something else you could try. Most newer computers will display during post something along the lines of "PRESS F12 TO SELECT BOOT DEVICE" - again the wording will vary between models. Search your screen for anything that looks similar, and press the appropriate key; you should be presented with a list of drives, so choose the one you want to boot from.

If you've done this and it still doesn't boot from the disc, then the disc is very likely not bootable (Or your DVD drive is malfunctioning).

Computer Still Down (Bad PBR)

the reason why you didnt receive any back up discs because your computer has a recovery partition. To access it,restart your pc,tap ctrl+f11, select "restore".It will format your hard drive and will load factory imag that has your windows and dell apps..if that didnt work, you can request back up disc here, support.dell.com/xpscd

Compaq presario 5000 not booting up right.

Does the Compaq logo appear when you try to start the computer? Try pressing F10 several times after turning on the power. This should start the "recovery console", which will give you some options for restoring Windows. If the recovery console doesn't start up, there is a good possibility that your hard drive or power supply module may be defective. In that case, you will probably need professional assistance to diagnose the problem.
