I have had good luck using an engine starting fuel, sprayed into the air cleaner/intake. Any auto repair store will carry this product. CAUTION, HIGHLE FLAMMABLE!!!!!!! Many mechanics frown on using starting fluids, but I have a bad shoulder & that is what I do on the 3rd pull.

I also was having issues with an old 5 horse Troy Built tiller that would fire when gas was in the tank then stop running. If it's a Briggs and Stratton engine like the one I have it's probably you can remove the muffler to gain access to the side of the carb. Remove the four screws and the cover off the fuel pump diphram and check to make sure that the rubber isn't cracked or degraded. I replaced the one I had and it now runs like a champ.

Gas tank leak

The gas tank would go with the engine. Find the engine number (Briggs & Stratton?, Kohler? ) You can order it online from Briggs & Stratton parts, or like Jack's small engine, or your local mower parts supply. Common poblem with these plastic tanks.

Old (1981)Troy Prof. 8hp tiller runs 30 sec. and stops.

Clean the carb and if this machine was kept outside all winter make sure no water in tank. I realize you stated that you removed old gas but how it was removed is the key. Try the carb thing first though.

My troy-built tiller/edger won't start without 500 pulls. it has a newplug and fresh gas-oil. it was sitting for some years without being used,it started last fall and now nothing.

sounds like a fuel issue the carb has a diaphram after sitting for so long it is probably gummed also check fuel filter and fuel line inside tank

Troy Built 6.0 HP stored for winter. Fired up and

Most definitely. You aren't getting enough gas, probably because the float valve is gummed up. Drain the gas, put in a little carb cleaner and a little fresh gas. Fire it up. Do that a couple of time if needed, then fill tank with fresh gas. Use a gas stabilizer like Sea Foam to prevent this.

Troy built tiller starts chugs along and then kills full size mod

I'm sorry you are having trouble with your Troy-Bilt Tiller. I have a genuine Troy-Bilt and I miss the original manufacturer and the help they provided me with my 30 year old machine.

I believe your trouble is in the needle valve adjustment. If you check the bottom of the carb, you will find the needle valve. It should be open about 1 1/2 turns and then fine tuned open or closed a bit to get the best speed. There is the possibility that your carb is dirty inside and could benefit from some carb or injector cleaner. You may also benefit from installing a new spark plug as well. Sometimes, in older engines, you can benefit from using a spark plug one or two heat ranges higher. You will have to experiment with these options to find the best for your situation.

I hope you find these suggestions to be of some benefit.

My tiller only starts when I pore gas into the carberator air inlet. Then it surges for a couple of seconds and cuts off

IF THE TILLER HAS BEEN SITTING A WHILE I WOULD CLEAN THE CARBERATOR SOUNDS LIKE GUM BUILD UP. I HAVE HAD LUCK WITH DRAINING ALL THE OLD GAS AND DUMPING CARB CLEANER IN THE TANK WITH GAS AND KEEP TRYING TO START SOME TIMES THE CLEANER WILL DO ITS NJOB AND CLEAN THE GUM OUT OF THE PORTS IN THE CARB
