Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a side by side refrigerator model # GSH25SGRB 55 that on a fairly regular basis whistles. It has a high pitched sound. At first I thought it might have to do with the water filter, but I have changed the filters regularly and the noise continues. I can not pinpoint the source but guess it might have something to do with the waterlines or the pump for the water and ice. However the noise lasts much longer and I can't link it to the ices cycle. Any thoughts on what to try to stop the whistlihg.

Pull out from wall but could not isolate noise from back. I did find thatn if I openned freezer door from front, the noise is clearly coming from within. Any more thoughts or suggestion? If the fan is still a possibity, how does on oil it?

I thought I had responded to this but can not find it and this computer is acting up so here goes.

I pulled out the fridge and listened for a fan or other cause from the back and could not pin point anything. I did however discover that if you open the freezer door on the front you can hear the whistle very loud. It is clear that the sound is coming from the freezer compartment. I don't know if this confirms or confuses your guess. If it confirms your view, how and where do I get access to the fan? the back is one big panel and I don't see any other "freezer" openning?. If this is something else anyother thoughts? Thanks in advance...

There is a fan in the freezer compartment which might be needing a spot of oil in its bearings. The sound must be the friction noise from the bearings ( a high pitched whirring noise ). To confirm this put your ear to the back side of the freezer compartment when you hear the sound.

Whistling sound from inside freezer compartment

is this a loud whistling, like a dying bird stuck in your freezer, or is this a lower pitched, sort of gentle whistling sound. If its the former, you likely have a faulty freezer fan motor. replace
if its the latter, sounds like you may have a issue with the door damper, which allows the air flow from the freezer into the refrigerator. However, assuming you dont have any cooling problems, you didnt mention if you do, it may simply be a normal occurance, as some makes and models open and close this damper door automatically, and when it is closed, can sometimes cause a low whistling noise

My GE Refrigerator makes a terribly high pitched whistling noise when it is running. Any ideas? It works fine.

If you can track down exactly where the noise is coming from I would guess it's coming from the control board. Some are located on the back about middle ways up on the right side. Some are located in the control area inside the fridge. A model number would help with locating it.

Fridge is whistling

Mine was making a moaning, whistling noise coming from just above the ice maker. It happened when the fan speed changed. I learned on this site that the motherboard was probably defective.
Rather than go thru GE, we found a new one online for 66 bucks. I replaced it in about ten minutes and it's all fixed. Poor materials on the original, but this site was very helpful.
