Question about Black & Decker D5500 Iron
Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
I think it is not detecting a signal from the 30 second horizontal motion sensor or the 8 minute up right motion sensor. Have you tried shaking it vigorously in several different planes of motion to see if it would "snap out of it?"
The key here is.. you have a flashing display of 8 after 30 seconds and no heat. That is pretty much telling you it is in the self protect / turn off the heat mode. If someone dropped the iron, the motion sensors could already be damaged and it will not heat.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Failure of the temperature sensor - you will have to replace it. Unfortunately there are no replacement part for it available for sale - they can be obtained only by an order from the manufacturer and only by a certified repair shop, you will have to take it to one. Ask a quote before accepting the repair, otherwise you might have some unpleasant surprises: that it will be cheaper just to buy a new one.
