My Laptop LCD is broken. Can I hook up a stand alone LCD Monitor to it and be able to see the desk top, or will I first have to get a driver for it?

Sounds as though you have a backlight issue. How old is the monitor?
The keyhole with the lock sign is for a security lock to lock the monitor to a desk so it cannot be stolen.

Most electronic stores sell wall mounting brackets. There are several types. one mounts the LCD screen flat to the wall with a limited range of tilt. Another type mount the LCD screen on an arm that allows tilt and swing movements.

Attaching a second monitor to a Laptop, if its fairly new, will automatically load a second display. Right click the background on your LAPTOP screen and select properties after you attach the monitor cable. Go to settings. You should see two monitors. If not, you need to press Fn+ F6 on most Laptops to activate the second monitor. See your owner's manual on function key (Fn) Choose the second monitor screen and set the desired resolution.

It may be caused by 2 reasons:

1. The notebook is not correctly configured for an external display - you may need to install the display drivers or update it.

2. The backlight inverter on the display may have problems and need repairs. Check if you can see a faint image in the screen.

The LCD on my laptop dell inpiron 1420 has a line at the lower part of the screen and it is color blue and red, how can i fix it?

Try connecting to a stand alone monitor and use the fn and Video switch key, what ever it is on your lap top to see if it will switch to the stand alone monitor. If it works on the stand alone monitor, the graghic chipset is ok. BUT you may have a problem with a broken wire that runs to the lcd panel. Replacing is Not for the average user to fix. Make sure it isnt your Video Chipset 1st as it is probly soldier to your Motherboard and you would have to buy a replacement motherboard, they average (150 to 450 bucks) not put in.

Screen does not work on my latitude c840

If your LCD screen on the laptop does not display a picture and if you hook up an external monitor and it doesn't display anything either, then your video card is bad.
But--before you go trash the thing, when you hooked up the external monitor, did you push the Fn key and the corresponding special function key at the top of the keyboard that switches the output to the external screen? (It does not just display to the external screen without you telling it to.
What your uncle describes is a problem with the laptop LCD monitor, not the video card.

Try setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz. (Maybe 75).
Is it xp?
Right click an empty part of the screen, properties, under monitor (I think; I'm on Vista) you can choose the refresh rate.
Most LCD's should be at 60 Hz.

VERTICAL COLORED LINES ON MONITOR

Your panels are dying.
Well more to the point the driver tabs that run the panel are dying and are not going to be cheap to repair for either case.

For the stand alone LCD, it is cheaper to get another one.
For the laptop, find a laptop on Ebay or similar with a dead motherboard and swap out the screens, also gives you spare parts for the laptop. If you goto a repair shop and get a screen it will cost you as much as a new laptop.
