Question about GE VG2042 VHS VCR

Open Question

I just got a used GE VG2042 VCR without a remote. Power is fine, motor seems to quietly do everything it's supposed to... but I'm just not getting a picture. When I play a tape, some signal is getting through, but all I can see is very dark shadowy movement, with flickering and snow. Tracking in either direction only fades the picture to all snow. Universal remotes will turn the VCR on and off, but I can't get any kind of a menu to display, probably just because the display isn't good enough. We really want to save the VCR if we can, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

(continued). Perhaps I should mention that a clear signal passes through the VCR from satellite box to TV, so it's not a cable or connection problem.

SOURCE: Is there a fee for this service?

I assume you are wanting to use one remote box to control most/all of your equipment? Some remotes have that capability, others do not, as they run only the piece of equip they came with, or perhaps that branded equipment. My suggestion, if you can't come up with instructions for your current remote, is to look into purchasing a universal remote which specifically lists your models of equipment you wish to run. The better ones may also have the capability of doing advanced programming (timed record for example) of your VCR. Look here for codes here- didn't realize such a site existed 'til now: http://www.remotecentral.com/features/remotes.htm

SOURCE: VCR Malfunctioning

The power supply is starting to fail. If you can solder, you should be able to fix this. If memory serves me correctly, there are 2 capacitors that may be causing this. Look for a cap in the 22ufd range on the primary side of the power supply. This cap will be a 160V electrlytic cap. Replace it with a new one. That may resolve it. In the meantime, I'll look up your model for additional specifics.

Sometimes the codes used in the remote are the wrong type for your model VCR. Though functions will work with some codes. It's best to try some of the other codes for GE VCR's and see if that triggers it to life the missing menu.

How do I change the vcr to 'SLP' - it seems to be stuck on 'SP'. (There is no "speed" button on my remote.)

Use the remote to get into the setup menus. There may be an option to change tape speed when recording. Alternatively, when you press record on the remote (or deck), you may have option to change the tape speed there.

The VCR part of your deck may be able to playback, but not record in SLP mode.

Searched around for the manual for your machine, and though there are references to it, it appears that a manual / information page doesn't exist for the model # that you listed.

Hello eldillon,

You can contact the manufacture and get a replacement remote. I would advise that you do this before getting a universal remote.
Try GE's website

I hope this helps

Remote control

Does the DVD player have an RF output or only video? That's a drag there are no RF/Video buttons. I had a TV like that too. I suppose you already knew this. Remote controls for even newer TV's are hard to find. Good luck.

Timer

You first must have the original remote, go into the menu, and go to timer settings. You cannot use most universal remotes to go into menu funtions. You can get an original replacement at http://remotes.com Good Luck
