Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

I have a Badger 7 G.D. unit. I was told by the plumber from Roto Rooter who recently came out to service the unit that to keep the blades sharp to put ice in the unit & turn it on. The ice was supposed to clean & sharpen the blades. I did this with a cup of ice three separate times. It worked first two times, but on the third try, it quit. I can't get it to turn on again. It doesn't hum or do anything. Water does run through it, but nothing else happens. I tried all the breakers on my panel & still nothing. Is there a reset button I should push & if so where is it? Help!!!

Thanks so much for the reply. Actually, I already found it & after I depressed it, voila! The button was on the far side and out of view; but I figured it would be the solution. I felt around until I found it.

This is a great idea for help with problem such as mine.

Again, thank you & have a great evening.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
Look on the very bottom of the disposer. There should be a RED reset button on the bottom that you deprss to reset the disposal. After resetting turn on the disposal and see if it works.
See figure B on page 10 of the manual for location of the reset button. (It is obvious even without the manual)

Let me know if this works for you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Roto rooter the drain pipe in the wall. It's plugged. The water goes up the vent pipe to the roof that's why the water comes back in the sink when you shut off the disposer.

Thier is an Allen key hole at the very bottom and center of the badger. Try using that with an Allen key. And if it leaks your from where your wires are coming out of your seal is probably bad. Means new badger

There should be a reset button (circuit breaker) on the bottom of the unit. It sounds more like the blades are stuck. Pull the plug on the unit and use an allen wrench on the manual blade turner on the bottom of the unit. If the blades are stuck, you will have to try and loosen them with the allen wrench. If you do get them loose, the question then is what was holding them. Could be debris in the ISE or something broken like a blade. Keep the unit unplugged when working on it.

Not familiar with that model, but one time I found a baby sock jamming the water outlet in a dishwasher, so check to make sure there's no foreign object blocking any exits. Other than that, I suspect it will need to be serviced, or at least taken apart for further inspection.

When rinse cycle starts it overloads drain

I would ask the original Plumber what the problem was.
It could be solved with replacing your main run of drain pipe with one of slighly bigger bore.
Some drain problems are caused more by bad design in the first place than by abuse.

You should be running no more than 6 feet of 40mm pipe before opening out into 80mm+
Any corners should be "swept" turns if possible, as tight bends may look neat - but are bad for fluid flow.

If you are an industrial user, make sure a grease trap is installed at the premises. - and clean out regularly.

If you live in an older part of Town, You most likely have an older Sewer, 4-6" clay drain tile leaving your house. This Tiles is in 2-4ft clay sections, layed together with concrete and other ("OLD FASHION TECH") You or your neighbor probably have roots in your old clay tiles creating a blockage. The Roots can enter through the cracks between the old joints of the clay tile in search for a great supply of water!!! Your cheapest and best bet is to call a certified roto-rooter company or someone able to use a roto-rooter rental machine. If you need more info, feel free to ask....Joe

IN SINK Erator/ Badger Not Grinding waste

if the InsinkErator is least than 2 years old, you should call the service.
there is 2 year In-Home Parts and Labor Warranty by InSinkErator.
if not you have to disaemble the unit and see what is keeping the blade from turning.

let me know if that is what you need.
