It probably is not recognized. Plug it in and Click "start" click on control panel and click on to open. Find "device manager" and right click on and open, click continue.. Ciick on the box with + next to "IDE ATA/ATAP controllers. In the drop down see if you see a ? or !. if so click on that. Right click on each item one at a time. You should see "disable" in each one. If you see "enable" then click on that. Right click on each one again and click on "properties". You should see "this device is working properly"
Click on the box with + next to "Human Interface devices". You should see your hard drive there. Right click on that and you should see "disable" if you see "enable" click on that.

If you don't see your device anywhere, try a different USB port.

USB's slow and external drive

For the USB ports, you may want to verify that the drivers for the "enhanced USB" are up to date and for USB 2.0 or 1.1. USB 2.0 ports are generally backwards compatible for 1.1 devices. The "enhanced" does indicate USB 2.0 controller. 30mins to backup 3GB to your external drive is a VERY long time. USB 2.0 transfers data up to 480mbps, but if you get an error message indicating that the device can perform faster on a 2.0 port, you maybe transferring data at 12mbps which is USB 1.1 speed

To speed up the transferring of data, identify which USB contoller in Device Manager is the USB port you're having a problem with, and delete it from Device Manager. Then, plug in your external drive into a USB port its never used before.

As for the naming of hard drives, Hitachi partners with several drive manufacturers including Dell and IBM.

Usb pulled out during use now not working

Sometimes when a flash memory stick or USB hard drive fails because it was not removed from the USB port properly. If the device is removed by just pulling it out of the USB port, it can cause the flash device to fail, you must click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Task Bar and select the device you wish to remove and only do so when instructed to do so.

When the flash memory or USB external hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.

You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive and in FAT32. (FAT32 will allow data to be exchanged between MACs and PCs).
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.

My hard drive and midi controller wont work with usb

When you connect a hard drive and any other USB device to a 4 port hub you have to use the external power supply all the time. You may have fried the power pins on the USB port you used to connect the 4 port hub. If you can get the hard drive to work separately on the USB port, the 4 port hub may no longer be passing power from the laptop.
