Question about Oreck XL2000 Bagged Upright Vacuum

Open Question

My Oreck 9200 XL will not turn on. It is not plugged. I need to know how to test the switch. I tested it and Ohms and it shows a reading. Is there any other parts I should test. I went around all the motor and there was connectivity.

Sounds like the Oreck is clogged. You'll have to undo the bag by the way of the clip in the middle at the back of the main black spindel neck and then at the bottom. Then take apart the main neck by pushing the rubber mounts upwards to release the pip fitting locks and holes. You should find that either the top of the neck or the bottom - where the dust channel feeder is located - is clogged. Either that or there may be a clog in the main dust channel after the roller brush or wedged into the fan unit itself - the Oreck XL is a dirty fan system which means clogged dirt can often get stuck between the dirt and the dirt channel.

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG THEIR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The motor has 5 wires to the motor as stated in the Oreck owners manual, tow are for the headlights, one is a ground wire, and the other two are for the motor. There are two screws that hold in the Oreck motor and a good suggestion is to use tape the wires leads and mark the wires so that you will not make a mistake as you take it apart and reassemble the motor. That way you will not make any mistakes, whether or not you have wires for a headlight or not, the rules are the same. Also refer to the owner’s manual schematic and the exploded view. SOURCE: My Oreck XL is very dirty inside on fan and the

These units are called dirty air units because the dirt literraly runs thru the fan attached to the motor and is blown into the bag. Most newer vacuums are called clean air because the filter bag is in the path, and the dirt is sucked into the bag, never reaches the fan or motor.

I'd say if it is that dirty, may be a fire hazard, and you may have worn out the seals on the part down at base that pivots to a point that replacement is necessary.

(I'd blow out the dust and keep using if it was me, and then check again in a few weeks, before I replaced. But I like living dangerous.)

My Oreck Xl was working. Turned it off to do other stuff. But the next few minutes whne I turned it on, it didn't turn on. But why?

You've probably tried all this but humor me, check the plug to make sure it's not loose, make sure the terminals at least feel like they're tight and still connected, the walk down the cord (unplugged), hand over hand to make sure there aren't any bulges or shallow feeling spots showing a problem in the wiring.

I would guess there is a fair amount of problems with the foot switch, but I don't know this, after plugging back in, slap the switch with your hand vigorously a few times, if corrosion or a fault is present, this might wake it up, at least give you an idea of where to head next if it tries to run.

Is your cord still retracting as normal?

Oreck hand held will not turn on

More than likely, one of three problems. You have a broken wire somewhere in the cord or inside the vacuum. Second, the switch could be bad, third, you have a bad motor. If you have access to a multimeter, you can check all three of those things out by checking for continuity through all parts of the vacuum. Hope this helps!

Oreck vacuum repair manual

Unless you have a foot switch, the on/off switch for most Oreck vacuums are up in the handle. You will have normally 6 screws that hold the handle halves together. Take the screws out and then split the two halves apart and you will find the switch inside at the top front of the handle. You may have had a wire come off of the switch and it just needs to be plugged back onto the switch and then you can re-assemble the handle and you should be back in service. If you have a foot switch, you might need a meter to check continuity throughout the vacuum because you may have a broken wire somewhere. Hope this helps you solve your problem.

My Oreck XL vacuum was goign along just fine and then it turned off. Tried several different outlets, nada. There was not noise or smell prior.

A common problem with orecks is that the cord shorts out as well as the plug. with you model the switch is at the base of the vacuum so it wouldnt be the switch. the best idea would be to take it in to an Authorized Oreck Dealer. I know at my stores we dont charge for service estimates. if it is the cord we could confirm it. but it cost about $50 for a brand new cord and the labor to install it.

Have an Oreck XL upright, when switch turned on no "Power" checked receptical and power supply is OK

What typically happends is if the vacuum falls over the cord will come disconnected from the switch.
there are 6 screws on the handle if you unscrew them the handle will seperate down the middle. you will see a few wires in there. the whites wires should be wire nuted together while the black wire from the long cord, the side that you plug in to the wall, would plug on to the top of the switch, unless you have a 2- speed vacuum the it also would plug into the top but on the prong that is closes to you. it will make sense when you open it up. there is another cord that come up from the base of the vacuum to the handle which is called the up cord. the black wire that comes from that plugs in to the bottom of the switch.
if that doesnt work then you might have a short in your cord that will need to be replaced or your motor could have gone bad. and oreck motor typically last about 8 to 10 years.
if more problems occur i would recommend bringing it to and authorized Oreck dealer. If your vacuum is under warranty it will be fixed for free.

Oreck XL upright - has a 2 speed switch. Now only works in high speed not low speed. Will a new switch correct or is it the motor

Your vacuum is fine. The switch can either run at full speed or half speed. You are running at full speed, you need a new 2 speed switch. You can pick them up at an Oreck Store for $29 or around $15 on eBay

Quit working, no power

Most likely culprits, assuming you have power to the outlet you are pluggung into are (1) a bad electrical cord - damaged by bending, tugging on, etc. or (2) a bad power switch. After that, I would check the wires running to the motor.

All of these test require you to open up the unit to properly test. As such, need to be at least mildly acquainted with electrical safety and use of an electrical meter to test continuity.

No Power

try the fuse of course. if that is ok, a likely cause is the mains cable broken usually near the point where it enters machine. if neither of those, suspect the switch or possibly a motor fault
