it really depends on how you have configured the settings.

Is it a stand alone router (ie not plugged to your pc via usb) ? I'm guessing that you have ADSL 1 (not 2) so you'd need to have the right things configured.

However in saying that I think you'd probably find that depending on the PC specs it may really be vista causing your speed issues. If you're comfortable with it or not i'd buy more RAM and install it, (depending on age of the motherboard it could be DDR, or DDR2). If the RAM doesnt do anything for it you'd probably have to upgrade the processor etc (which usually also means upgrading the motherboard).

If it were me, i'd be "down grading" back to XP if its an old PC.

Who's your Internet Provider??? You havent changed the specs for that recently?? IE. 1500/256 vs 512/128.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Every time i go onto the zoosk web site it keeps telling me to upgrade my browser which i dont understand & cant seem to get rid of

Most modern web sites require a newer version of a "web browser" in order to ensure that all of the features of the web site work correctly. You are probably using an old version of "Internet Explorer" which is the web browser built in to Windows.
If you are using Microsoft Windows XP or newer, you should visit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8 and download an install Internet Explorer 8.
If you have an older version of Windows, the alternate "Firefox" browser can get downloaded from http://getfirefox.com. When you install that, click on the "Firefox" icon to access web sites like Zoosk that need a newer browser.
If you are running very old Windows system like Windows 98, you may not be able to get rid of the message and should consider getting a newer computer.

as window 7 is more recent OS it has many advantages compared to old
so many drivers and utilities are preinstalled in Windows 7 whereas not in XP

if you have 3 computers now... Wireless router

The answer to both your questions is yes. The laptop and the 98 does not care what router they are pluged into, the settings on them will not be affected. Only if you change the adaptors on the the 98 or your XP's will the 98 or XP need any adjustment. (unless you change the WEP key, then it is just a matter of putting the new WEP key in the xp and 98 machines.)

Windows 98 changing from dialup to high speed

You can do this, but I would not recommend it. Windows 98 is very susceptible to malware. You can get things just by going to the wrong website. These are called drive by downloads. It will get very slow from all of the malware running on the system very fast.

Look into downloading a Linux distribution like Ubuntu, or PCLinuxOS. You will be able to find a linux distro that will fit on your old computer and be very secure. Look at Distrowatch for many more options.

It is not possible to use Windows 98 on the Internet and remain secure. If you post the model/serial number of the compaq computer, or its stats then we could tell you if you can upgrade it to XP or Windows 2000, but this may not be practical on older equipment.
