I have a set of Motorola Talkabout AZ489FT4818. One of which can not be recharged, even after 3 days. Any suggestions as to what else to try or check? Also, where else can I buy a AAA cassette for the pair? Thank you

Why does my motorola talkabout radio shut off when I try to radio someone

Low, defective, or poorly charged battery. It takes more energy to transmit than to receive. On a low battery you can sometimes listen (receive) all day, but one press of the PTT and your radio will shut down.

1) Try radio with a known good battery, or swap the battery from the other radio for a true test and see if the problem leaves.
2) Recharge or replace rechargeable batteries every 18-24 months.
3) Clean all battery contacts with a pencil eraser to assure good connection before charging.

If none of these solve your problem, the radio itself has an issue and needs replaced.

Best regards.

My talkabout t5000 got water in it how do i fix it and make it turn on

As a last ditch effort:
1) remove the batteries or rechargeable battery pack. Do not reinstall or try to transmit until the unit is thoroughly dry.
2) Dry the unit inside and out with a towel.
3) Dry the unit more with a blowdryer on low heat.
4) Some have suggested placing the unit in dry rice or silica gel packets for a day or two.
5) Once your are certain the unit is completely dry, you can try batteries in it. If your rechargeable battery pack was saturated too, you will need to replace it.

This radio will still have the likelihood of growing corrosion, which will eventually cause the radio to fail. However, if you can get it dry, you may be able to get some more time out of it, before you need to replace it.

Greetings, I have 4 Motorola Talkabout T5720s bought all the same time about 1.5 years ago. 1 failed after a year - I say failed (did not transmit or receive nothing even though it was on the same...

You did not mention if the display comes on and they look functional, yet do not work. If the radio actually powers up. We will go from the idea the radio powers up and present a few troubleshooting ideas:

1) Clean your battery contacts. Use a pencil eraser and clean the contacts both in the radio and on the battery. If you are using a Motorola rechargeable battery pack, you should also clean the battery contacts on the charger. (Note: rechargeable NiMH and Li-Ion batteries have a 14-18 month life expectancy. Signs of a bad battery include: no or intermittent transmit, the radio shutting off when the PTT is depressed, lots of static when receiving, and/or erratic display.)

2) Set your interference code eliminator (code) back to zero (off), and do the same with your Qt filter if you radio is equipped with one. This will put you back to a very basic operation.

3) Check your VOX or iVOX settings, be certain these are also turned off.

4) Check your accessory jack to see if something is plugged into the hole. Remove any and all accessories to try in a basic form of operation.

5) Moisture is the enemy. Be certain radios are not stored near air conditioners, humidifiers, etc.

If the above items do not solve the problem, you likely will need to retire the units. As for your next venture. If you go with the Motorola TalkAbout line, examine your radios before the one year mark, save the receipt, most have a one year warranty. If you are wanting an all around better radio, look at the Commerical line of radios offered by Motorola, ie. CP110 and BPR40. They would offer a better durability and are designed to do a 40 hour work week.

Best regards.

My phone thinks it has low battereys

Rechargeable batteries eventually won't work after being charged and discharged many times. You can purchase a replacement battery for your phone at a local electronics store or online. (alot of ebay sellers will have replacements).

How to charge battery in Motorola Talkabout Distance DPS

You can obtain a wall adapter style charger for your radio at your local Motorola dealer, or online at

Sidenote: The rechargeable battery is good for about 2 to 3 years. You can tell the age of your battery by looking at the date code on the back of the battery above the stop sign. The first number is the year, the next two numbers are the week of the year. 915 would be 2009 the 15th week. (Or if very old it could be 1999 the 15th week.) A good battery, when charged will go an 8-10 hour day.

Keep both of your charge trays, replacements for these are no longer available.
