Internet connection problem My older Compaq evo tower suddenly stopped connecting to the internet tried an other wire still nothing an even older computer connects fine what could be my problem

redux 1.facts emerge.
Ethernet port dead, router ok other PC work there.
unknown card stated, of the 4 .
mint version v18. Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon
be important and even kernal version. 4.4.0-17?
HP EVO D510. year made 2002, even sold with
windows 2000, so old . 16 years old today,
(no spring chicken, and most new OS fail on all 16year old PCs, for good reasons, no new drivers)

it came new with these.
which one do you have.? PCI card.

Integrated Intel PRO/100 VM network connection
3COM 3C905C-TX network connection
Intel PRO/100 S management adapter
Broadcom NetXtreme based 10/100/1000 management Gb adapter

at the Linux command prompt
type
lspci -nn -v (enter) the 2 spaces are mandatory.

see this. in the stream of acts see ethernet pop.
(we can do this this in windows and linux now)

http://www.pcdied.com/example-nn-v.JPG

what is in that slot is anyone's guess, 100's of card there possible.
what I do is open the case side and look
read the card words there, stamped on it,
3com cards are JUNK, HP does not support it now.
(they own it and killed it, wiki HP buys 3COM 2010)
i think linux avoids it for the same reasons.
(reason HP does not make drivers for this card now nor host the old, dead as door nail it is)

what mint? V18 ,ok.
what card is there.

I'd run Ubuntu v16, with a NIC card they like.
Intel card
broadcom
Realtek
tops my list.

the Linux kernal is complied with some NIC cards.
only ,each version is different and very hard to pry this info from them.
sadly,

i see mint fails even on a new ASUS board
with Realtek RTL8111F
a vary common chip
the helper says kernal 4.5 might work.
but that is for newer chips never the old

https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/4f09o5/no_ethernet_with_linux_mint_173_cinnamon/

let me tell you how Kernels are built.
they delete old chips is the rule!
the newer kernals delete the chips used 10 years ago or older,
why
so the kernal is not full of 1000s of useless chip drivers,, making it huge.
reason #2, how can a new Kernal be tested on 100s more dead CHIPs, (dead means not sold, not found now) Impossible, endless task that would be and is not done, same rules MS PNP use.same reasons.

now that you know that
the learn what card you have,
you then ask the mint guys, what kernal
worked on that old card.
(if lucky some poor sod can remember that long ago and answer.

why not buy $20 PC used at GOODwill and is 2007 or newer, be really wise choice.
that is my full and long answer.
if you had told the nic card there, answers go faster.

so brave up see that CAT5 cable on rear of PC
where does it go?
inside,
if a card , what card?, only what card matters.
or buy new one that is supported, for say $10

Compaq evo n1015v will not boot up when power is pressed

For this kind of issue, please follow up the following steps to check:

1.confirm the battery and ac adapter connect the laptop normally.Maybe the bad connect lead to this problem. If there are no lights when you turn on laptop, one of possible reason is that your adapter is malfunction.

2.the second possible cause is laptop dc jack failure. If the dc jack is broken or loose, you are required to replace it or repair it.

3.Another possible reason is that there is something wrong with laptop motherboard. For this situation, it includs two kinds of possibility,a failure in an electronic circuit and BGA malfunction.

For more detailed reasons and solutions, please have a look at the following article:http://www.ifitjams.com/lappower.htm

If you verify your laptop adapter is dead and you plan to order a new one, I recommend one for you on the basis of your laptop model:

How do I turn on the wifi feature on my Compaq H1015v Lap top

According to the product specifications on HP/Compaqs website, this model Evo does not have wireless built in, only modem and ethernet ports are the means for getting online. A wireless usb card can be used to get wireless. Specs can be found here -

I have a used Compaq evo n6 and am wondering if it is able to connect to the interest wirelessly. I tried a few things, but still not sure.

The EVO n610c does not have a built in wireless card. You can purchase a USB wireless card at most Stores that sell computers. Walmart, bestbuy, Office Depot, and others.

Need help with Wifi Connection with COMPAQ EVO N610C LAPTOP

First you will need a router which will enable you to create a wireless network for your internet connection. I recommend, if you're purchasing online, to use Tigerdirect. Then you would need a USB wireless adapter for your laptop which will enable it to communicate with the wireless router and establish an internet connection.
Below are some links for the most affordable and best rated products you need.

Wireless network connection problem

Ok with a peripheral on USB or on PC card bay you can try to connect to a Wireless lan:
Please check this tip on the subject
To connect to an existing WLAN you must be sure your wireless card is working: I assume you installed all the related sw coming with the wlan card.
Using the card installed driver check card is enabled and running (in Control Panel/Network connection should be visible and enabled)
Then you can connect to an open Wi-Fi HOTSPOT or to your WLAN you configure with a router connected to your internet modem.
  1. To connect to an existing HOTSPOT: find a location where you know a wi-fi access point (HOTSPOT) is active: Internet cafe,, library, airport,, station, hotel etc.your card should be able to find the existing network when you select "show existing network" in wlan driver. Connect if network is "unsecure" (= no password or key is required) or ask for password if you can get it for a fee (hotel)
  2. To connect to your home or office WLAN be sure to use a router (or access point) with same standard of your card (802-11G or B or A or N) with same security protocol (WEP or WPA) and configure your router Internet access BEFORE wireless access. Connect your PC to your router using a LAN cable and be sure you can browse through the router.(contact your ISP for router specs if you need it: PPOA/E and other). Follow the tip and your router doc for settings

You could try using a wireless adapter that connects through usb but the connection is not as strong. Otherwise I would try to buy an internal wireless card which is just installed into a PCI slot on your motherboard.
