How do i remove the starter from a 2001 25 hp yamaha outboard motor?

Disconnect battery , remove red and black wires on starterthen remove the top 2 bolts on starter and 1 or 2 bolts at bottom , pending which model but it should come off now !

Try spraying some CRC Light lubricant on the spiral where the pinion gear slides up and down. Can you turn the gear so it will move up to the flywheel? If it turns and stays at the bottom, you will need a new pinion gear! Does the starter motor spin?

I have one of these tilters and it's on a 2009 25Merc. I had to modify it because the pull handle is located lower on the back of motor.

40 HP 2 cycle outboard. Tilt works, but engine does not turn over. Yamaha outboard should mention.


So either the battery needs charging, the starter button / key are faulty, or the starter/solenoid is faulty. You need a test meter.

Look below lower mountings you will see the shift rod with along nut and a lock nut,undo long nut,do this with motor in reverse gear,some 40s have a stainless plate cover which you have to remove first

Starter motor on 130hp Johnson outboard won't


does it turn or can you hear a click as you try ? if its not turning check the starter brushes and if it clicks then replace solinoide !
