GE Whirlpool 21TFA, In then past weeks, water has appeared on the top glass shelf. I have removed the water pitcher. There is no ice maker. It is too much water for condensation. if this water doesn't refreezes, it becomes ice. Usually, it takes two full bath towels to dry of the glass shelf.

SOURCE: Ice cubes made by ice maker become large fused chunks over time.

Ice cubes will deteriorate over time if not used. They shrink due to defrosting of the freezer and will become stale.
Once the ice bin is full, turn the ice maker off until you use the cubes and or dump the cubes every 3 or 4 days and start over.

SOURCE: Water accumulating in top shelf of refrigerator

I solved this by emptying everything in the freezer and taking out the floor of the freezer (2 screws - simple) and finding the drain hole covered in ice. I used a blow dryer to melt the ice. Then I used a turkey baster to place boiling water into the drain hole, waiting 30 seconds, using the baster again to remove the cooled water and reapeating this until the ice in the drain tube melted. You can tell when the ice in the drain tube melts completely as you can hear the water falling into the pan in the bottom of the unit (under freezer and refrigerator).

SOURCE: ice maker flooded top freezer compartment

It may be just the water control valve on back of refrigerator. Put tap water in ice maker and lower lever for on. After ice is made, does it drop to tray? At this time when empty is the time the control valve is asked for water. The problem could be in valve on back or the inside ice maker itself. If you can try a few test with me I will help you locate the problem. Let me know what you find as I go through this with you. Sea Breeze

Water on the top shelf of the refrigerator

Your defrost drain is clogged and now the defrost drain trough has filled with ice causing the water from your defrost cycles to flow into the fresh food section. You will need to clear all ice form thr drain area and this is done thru the freezer wall and some models also have a removable bottom panel in the freezer that has to come out also to get to the drain. You can do this it will just take a little time. About an hour for a first timer with little experience. Good luck and hope this helps

Whirlpool, water puddles on top shelf of fridge

If it is not from a plugged or misaligned defrost drain tube, then it is always from air leaking into your refer section. Check you door gasket to see if it is sealing correctly all around your door. Make sure your door is shutting tightly every time. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists.

Ice maker quit after my husband over filled the top shelf and blocked the air flow for the freezer. The freezer started to defrost itself and water was on the floor in front of the freezer. He unblocked...

Yes, If you will try a couple things. Fill ice maker with water and let freeze. Tell me if it will drop the ice when frozen, Let me know that and your model number. I am doing this to decide which one is the problem. The ice maker or the water control valve. Sea Breeze

Replacing Defrost Heater and Bracket in Freezer Section of Fridge

I ended up having to remove things in this order: all shelves, ice maker insert, ice maker top ice tray, ice maker lower motor housing, shelving support rails (2), rear evaporator coil cover. This exposed the evaporator coils (which were already dry since the fridge had been off for two days) and most importantly, the defrost heater element below the coils. The heater element was easily unplugged from it's two connectors. I tested the unit with an ohm meter and it indicated it was open (infinity resistance). I then knew it was bad. I replaced it with a new unit and put everything back together in reverse order taking care to use the same screws. The fridge appears to be back in working order.

Ice maker jambed-now no water

The ice maker must be re-primed with water to sense frozen ice in the tray, dump, and refill. Use a cup or glass to manually pour the water into the tray just below the top of the blades. It should freeze, dump, and refill.
