Question about RTO Takagi TM-1-N Mobius Tankless Water Heater - Natural Gas

2 Answers

Hello, i have a Takagi T-K3 i am getting a code error 991. It had been operating flawlessly for about 4 months now when i turn it on nothing happens at all i have checked and cleaned my sensors. checked air intake and exhaust i did make some minor changes to the exhaust (added a condensate trap). I still try to start it but nothing happens i still get the 991 error code. Is there a way to reset this code or does it go away once the problem is fixed. Thank you Mike

Hi,

Not sure if you have the manual for that so here it is.....

http://www.takagi.com/download/product_manuals/T-M1.pdf

It however does not mention how to reset that code...to reset it I know that you need to push a specific set of buttons on a specific order...i do not know what they are or the order...

They are supposed to have full time customer support... here is the page for the numbers..you will have to call them for the reset code as it is not public knowledge...

You get no argument from me on that!!! There is no reason why they cannot place the sequence of buttons in the manual...
I have installed a few of these units but have never had to get the code from them...
Would love to try and call them sometime but just have not taken the time to do it...

Yes... the 991 code is a poor combustion code...

high winds could definetely cause that to occur...

OMG 95 PSI is too high a pressure for a tankless! What was the W.C. in inches on the manometer?
Also on a T-K3 12 isn't a Code but a partial Code. You need an R/C to make this easier as counting led flashes produces wrong codes.
you'll have to find the correct code it's throwing not a partial.
And put a Pressure Reducer on this to below 60 PSI. 95 PSI is only impressive when it blows the tubing out after a few years.
Call Takagi in California not A.O. Smith in TN and they'll help someone fix this

My Takagi TK3 isn't heating as it should. Had a tech out and he adjusted the dip switches to 140 degrees, which worked for a while but now it barely heats to 100 degrees. Gas flow rate appears to be...

Is tankless computer older than 5 years? Imagine how well a 5-year old laptop computer works.

Setting temperature to 140 degrees might be the basic problem:
Read following resource:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html#temperature

I doubt this Takagi computer unit was maintained as shown in product manual, and that heat exchanger was not delimed each year as shown in product manual. So the heat exchanger is probably heavily coated with un-removeable scale... since yearly deliming will not fully remove scale on tankless units, the tankless computer is designed to sprial downward in efficiency despite glossy brochures that promise endless and effortless hot water for 20 years ... as if any computer will last 20 years:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html#de-lime

Since you are not getting error code, the problem might be crossover, or some other plumbing problem:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html#no-error
http://waterheatertimer.org/Crossover.html

I always recommend replacing tankless computer with tank-type water heater for $385 for same-day do-it-yourself solution and to save the endless expenses that arise with computer-driven water heaters.

991 error code on a Takagi T-K3 Flash gas tankless water heater

Re- set code!!!!
We have a Takagi TH3 DV 540 model.Air intake got blocked with snow, condensation etc.Once we cleared that then you just have to re-set it to clear the 991. On our model there are 4 tiny buttons across the bottom (Take off front cover) to find them. of the computer board assembly bottom left corner. Push the two buttons on the right simultaneously hold for 15-20 seconds or so, then turn the Takagi off then on again- should work now!
If you have a different model then those buttons will be in the bottom left corner still but running vertically- try doing as above with the bottom two buttons. We had to go without heat and hot water for 2 days until we could get hold of someone to tell us this. We called Seneca Supply 716-852-4744. Good luck

My Takagi T-K jr. keeps flashing an error code 21....the water turns cold and we shut it off ....wait a few...then turn it back on....works for a little then wil flash again...have replaced the pressure...

In my case, the error code 21 was caused by the failure of the vent fan to run-on after shut off (easily verified by listening to the unit). The problem was not resolved by swapping either the fan or the control unit with another heater. I talked to a local service tech who had a couple of suggestions. One was to move DIP switch #6 to the upper position. After doing thisit will be necessary to re-initialize the controll by cycling power off and on. This fixed the problem. I emailed Takagi tech support to ask if I should consider this as permanent fix, or if there was something else I should do. Since I got no reply, I'll pass on the tech's other suggestion: buy a Rinnai.

Turn on power,15-20 seconds later, get error code 991, abnormal or imperfect combustion. natural gas at 7 on the water column, filter clean. other contributing factors for this code? can hi-limit switch...

Hi,
First things... you have checked the inler filter andthe gas pressure, but have you checked and cleaned the thermistor(s)??? Also the flame sensor... clean that with a soft cloth...
Next turn down the temp with th dip switches that should tell you if it is the high limit...
Has the unit been cleaned with vinegar or CLR lately or ever??? there maybe buildup internally in the unit...
Is the flame a nice blue color or is it yellow???
Does it go out just before the unit cuts out???
Do the flames lift from the burner???

These are all things that I would be checking if I was coming to your home to check this unit...

Takagi TK-JR vibrating noise

I have the same problem with a T-K3. The Takagi support site recommended cleaning the burner. When the plummer arrived to attempt the cleaning, he was not convinced that it would help. He called the Takagi 800 number and let them hear the problem over the phone. They had him set the fan speed dip switch (#4 on the upper left bank of switches) to the up ("on") position and reset the system. Problem resolved! Why they didn't recommend this when I contacted them, I haven't got a clue. Anyway, the system hasn't vibrated in several days of use.
