Question about Danby DCD5505W Electric Dryer

Open Question

Danby Electric Dryeer Model DCD 5505W: Primary control knob broke at lug (shaft with a flat side) behind the switch unit where it attaches to the lug. I have just ordered three parts from PC Richard and Sons in hopes that one or all of them will solve the problem. how does this assembly come apart? Appliance works great, but I am concerned about long-term availablity of parts. it is about 6 years old now, but has had light use by single person. I don't seem to have the manual. Is there an owner's manual or repair manual available in pdf somewhere? Thank you.

My oven wont turn off from the knob it keeps turning

You didn't say whether you have a gas or electric oven, or oven & stove. I'll assume you have a stove, just to cover all bases.

First, you should shut down the oven: a gas stove will have a valve on the gas line behind the stove. The valve will either have a red handle or a flat stem that usually has a hole in it. Turn either valve 1/4 turn to shut off gas, use a wrench on the flat stem. An electric stove should be shut off by flipping off the double circuit breaker for it in your electric panel. Do not unplug an electric stove when it is on; this can damage the plug &/or electrocute you.

Most likely the inside of the knob has stripped out. Look at the knob for a hole that has a setscrew in it: a small allen wrench or screwdriver will loosen the setscrew, most knobs don't have them and will pull off. Be careful to use even pressure on two sides of the knob; if you can't pull it off, use two butter knives or flat screw drivers to pry it up enough to get a grip on it.

Look at the center stem on the back of the knob, it will likely be cracked or stripped. Some stems have a D-shaped metal insert that strips out inside the plastic stem. If you have one, pull off a burner knob and compare the stems in the back, if they are the same size, put the burner knob on the shaft for the oven control, and use that knob to turn the oven control off.

If the burner knob won't fit, use your fingers or a pair of pliers (gently) to turn off the oven control shaft. If the shaft stops normally, you can turn the stove back on using either the gas valve or the circuit breaker. If you have a gas stove that doesn't have electric ignition (a clicking noise when you turn on a burner) you may need to re-light the pilots for the burners. Lift the covers off the burners to re-light the pilots.

If you have succeeded in turning off the oven, you need a new knob -- you can get one at an appliance parts store or maybe a hardware store. If the oven control did not turn off normally, I would leave the oven/stove turned off: the control itself will need to be replaced by a qualified repair person.

I have a GE top load washer model #WJRR4170GWW. When I attempted to change the load size from large to super, the knob broke and came off the control panel. Now there is just a hole on the control...

themobilian_130.jpgThe new part has a clip in it that holds it to the shaft of the timer. Installing it is so easy. Just slip the new knob on the shaft of the timer. IF the shaft is still on the timer. Did you mean the shaft came out of the timer? In that case you would need a new timer.

I have a model SCO-150 crock pot. When I turned

Well stocked hardware stores have knobs that fit the heat controls on units like the Corningware slow cooker. That's either a local hardware store or a "big box" store. And Radio Shack or another big electronics parts places might, too. Notice the shaft of the control. It's almost certainly round with a "flat spot" on it. The flat spot is manufactured on the shaft of the control so the knob will have a place to "grip" the shaft and not slip. The knobs are pretty standard in the electrical industry. They're used for stuff like light dimmers and such. If you can measure the shaft, you'll probably find it's 1/4" in diameter - a standard size. Call your local True Value or Ace Hardware and explain the problem. It's almost a sure bet that they've got a solution. Make a measurement and make a call. If they've got one, go ahead and pack your cooker in with you, just to be sure. They can check the fit. One trip is all it should take. The staff at the hardware store is waiting to help you. They want you to call.

Here are the Danby instructions:
INSTRUCTIONS TO CHANGE DRYER BELT DCD5505W-1

REMOVE THE SCREWS ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONT THAT GO FROM BOTTOM UP

REMOVE THE TOP BY REMOVING THE 2 SCREWS HOLDING IT DOWN FROM BEHIND, PULL BACK AND LIFT OFF.

REMOVE THE 2 SCREWS ON EACH SIDE THAT GO FROM INSIDE FORWARD THAT HOLD THE PLASTIC FRONT ON AND REMOVE THE PLASTIC FRONT

REMOVE THE FRONT SCREW FROM THE CENTER BRACE BAR RUNNING FRONT TO BACK ACROSS THE TOP

REMOVE THE 2 SCREWS ON EACH SIDE AT THE TOP THAT WERE REVEALED WHEN THE PLASTIC FRONT WAS REMOVED

REMOVE THE 6 SCREWS AROUND THE FACE JUST INSIDE THE DOOR THEN SWING THE FRONT OUT RIGHT TO LEFT

REMOVE THE 2 SCREWS ON EACH SIDE OF THE INNER BULKHEAD PANEL AND REMOVE THE PANEL

I'm having trouble with the model # provided. If there is no switch directly behind the knob that turns that element on then it has a control board that is most likely behind the back panel about midway down on the left side. If it is this setup you will need to replace the board. If it has a switch directly behind the knob then replace that switch. Make sure unit is not plugged in when looking for or replacing parts.
