Sounds like the coolant in the CRTs need to be changed, Blue is always the first to congeal followed by green. Its actually a easier repair. I will post a link where you can get the phillips coolant replacement kit which contains the coolant required and an instructional CD with pictures of the process step by step. Heres the link its listed under the repair kit category.

Pretty common failure with rear projection CRT sets.
Sounds like one of your convergence amp chips have gone out.
You can buy the chips from several vendors, or kits.
Do a search with your model number and "convergence amp chips". Shop around for the chips as they seem to be getting cheaper as this type of TV isn't as popular as they once were.
I've picked up several used Sony and Mitsubishi sets for nearly free that had this problem..

Problem with sony 60" rear projection TV

Hi,
I'm afraid, it is problem of optical block unit (light engine) that produce picture by 3 lcds inbuilt, the blue lcd and its related uv filters become defective and causing this kind of blue hue on screen.
Complete optical unit block (light engine) will be replaced by qualified tech to get tv fixed, light engine is costly part so ask an estimate before sending tv in.
Thanks.

You can set the conversions manualy by going in to the sevice menu. Like you sed , you want to throw it away so you can try to set the convertions and if you fail you lose nothing. Get the service mode codes from this site, yust searsh for it. If you are clever , you wil fix your own tv, without ripping it appart.

Panasonic PT-51HX41 rear projection tv showing shadow/double images.

Unplug the TV from the ac wall outlet for about 4 minutes then plug it back in and turn it on. If it still has a double image then tell me if it's affecting the menu screen from the TV (not the cable menu). And is the double image in red and blue?
