Which hard drive is if not a samsung so i can get the imformation from the net

Master/Slave designation is determined by jumpers on IDE drives. Most drives have adequate markings on them to identify these jumper positions. If not marked clearly, you will need the manufacturer's data to determine that designation.
If you are curious about a working system just power-up in set-up mode (usually by depressing (f1-or-f2) during boot-up sequence, your system-bios will display this information for you.
Jumpers for a PC hard drive are next to the power connector. Mostly in between the power connector and the data cable connector. These are used for setting up Master/Slave settings and also to limit capacity of the HDD seen by PC BIOS on some older hard disks. Usually settings which are selected by jumper setting to various locations are printed on the hard disk information sticker.
hope this helps

Need verbage on jumper settings for Master/Slave, & cable select. I cannotput my hands on a manual and am moving it to a new system. Thanks. //Jim//

There are three jumpers on the back of the unit marked MST, SLA & CAB or something like that.

If it will be the only drive in the system you are putting it in connect it to the black connector (or if they are not colored to the end connector). And use the MST (master) jumper.

If it will be the second drive connect it to the grey connector (or if they are not colored the second connector from the end) and use the SLA (slave) jumper.

Note that there can be only one slave and one master drive on the cable so if there is already a drive on the cable check to see if it is set up as a master or a slave drive and set the new one as the opposite.

Can i put a samsung non sata sp1604n hard drive in an hp pavilion p6310y desktop as a slave drive ?? the sp1604n is not a sata type hard drive, but the master that came with it is. the master is a western...

Unless the motherboard in your system is different from the one shown on HP's site, the answer is no, you can't install the drive. At least you can't install it without additional hardware, which I'll describe in a moment. It looks like this board only has SATA connections for drives, which is becoming more common. So there is no conventional (i.e., old-fashioned) IDE connector for the data cable used by your Samsung drive. There's no place to plug the in the drive.

What you'll need if you want to use a parallel IDE drive is an expansion card like this one. There are many similar cards; I'm just using this one as a sample. The card installs in one of the PCI-E slots on your motherboard, and it provides the IDE connection you need. In addition to the card, you'll need an 80-conductor ATA-133 IDE cable.

With SATA drives, there isn't the master/slave designation since each SATA device has a direct connection to the motherboard. With the parallel cable, you can have two devices connected, so one needs to be designated as the master and the other one as the slave. The master is the drive connected to the plug physically at the end of the cable, and the slave is the middle plug. When you install your Samsung drive, set it for "master" or "single" drive as required. Some drives have a special jumper setting when used alone, while others need to be set as master even if there is no slave drive present. The jumper settings are usually marked on the drive, or you can check at Samsung's website.

Hope this has helped. Thanks for using Fixya!

How do you set master slave on this drive

On the back of the drive, there is a group of 8 pins grouped in 4 pairs next to the power connector. 3 of these will be marked MA (master or master with slave), SL (slave), and CS (cable select).
The Teac may have the jumper selection printed on the label on the drive.

Need IDE jumber settings.

There is a little jumper block on the rear of a DVD. by IDE connector. on the case above there will be a Table marked . Master: Slave: CS. Now, you must set the jumper as to your drive's position. IE: Master or Slave, Master is on the plug at the END of the ribbon, the Slave is on the "Other" one. Accordingly the Master has the Master Jumper ON, the Slave the Slave Jumper ON. CS is Cable Select. It isn't all that used.

How to install hitachi cdr-7930 on my dell dimension 4100 window xp home edition it doesent computer fails to boot with it hooked up

If this is a IDE drive...You may have the data cable connected the wrong way around. Do you only have one hard drive installed..? If you have and you are connecting this drive on the same data cable as your hard drive, you need to set the hard drive to "slave present" or "Master" and the dvd drive to "slave" If this is a SATA drive, you do not need to do this and you may have a faulty drive.. On the rear panel of the drives (where the cables plug in) is a jumper pin. Now either marked on the case or even on the drive label are the meaning of these pins. There are usually four sets of two pins laid out vertically. You need to put the little black jumper onto the pins marked "slave" on the dvd drive and "slave present" or "Master" on the hard drive if they are both on the same data cable. you can also set both drives to "cable select" but you then have to use the correct connector on the data cable for each drive. try the slave and master settings first, if you have no luck, message me again..

Bios Fail to detect Local Disk C and DVD-RW

I'm going to make an assumption here and guess that you have both hard drive and cdrom plugged into the same IDE cable. I think you have either 2 masters or 2 slaves and that is why the bios can't see them. On any one cable you can have a master and a slave. Drives have to be jumpered to configure them as a master, slave, or cable select. Cable select requires a certain kind of cable but in that system the master is the drive plugged into the first plug-in away from the motherboard or the middle plug and the slave is the second one or end plug on cable. If you can jumper cable select and then plug the hard drive into the middle plug on the IDE ribbon and the CD rom to the end one then you'll have a master and a slave. Bios should then read the drives. If that doesn't work then you have to jumper the hard drive to master and cdrom to slave. The cdrom is marked on the back as to which jumpers you use. MS/SL/CS. master/slave/cable select. The hard drive usually has jumper settings on the front of the drive but you might have to look up on manufacturer's web site. Most computers use cable select now.

Master slave jumper settings on 250gb Maxline Plus II SATA

There are no master/slave settings on SATA drives because each drive has its own cable. The drive order is determined by what SATA port they are plugged into, or by the BIOS configuration.

Where do i plug in a second hard drive on the motherdoard on a hp pavilion a1220n

When you open up the casing (make sure you ground yourself), there should be a ribbon cable marked master and slave. The master is your primary drive, so you would connect the slave to your secondary hard drive. Have any other questions, let me know
