Globalmap 2000 sonar not responding

I have a Lowrance Globalmap 2000 and a Lowrance Bluewater in-dash depth sounder - all hooked to a SAM-ST. The bluewater seems rather eratic and I have a message on the Globalmap sonar screen that says "Sonar not responding". Any ideas on how to fix this?

Ok, did some more wire tracing and searching and I was wrong - each unit has it's own through-hull transducer. The Bluewater will not read correctly, whether the Globalmap is on at the same time or not. Same is true for the Globalmap and getting the "sonar not responding message." All the connections up front (at the flasher, Globalmap, and SAM-ST) are clean and tight. I can't believe that both transducers would cease to function at the same time. Do the transducers themselves have a ground that could have come loose? I don't want to have to remove the batteries and charge to get in to inspect them unless I absolutely have to - especially in the middle of fishing weather!

Not enough info to diagnose your problem. It sounds like a networking problem. I couldn't find a manual for the sam-st module so I'm not sure how you have it hooked up. Typically with these devices only one would be hooked up to the SONAR module, and it would then share the data with the other display via an ethernet or NMEA2000 network. The erratic behavior of your bluewater could be due to some sort conflict with the current coming from the GlobalMap2000. Do you get the same problem when the 2000 is turned off? Have you tried running the GlobalMap2000 with the bluewater turned off?

All transducer connections are sealed and a cable failure would mean replacing the entire transducer and cable. The only thing I can think of that would cause a simultaneous failure would be possibly a screw from some other installation that happened to pierce both cables at the same time.

Is the SAM-ST getting power? It should have an LED indicator that lights up when turned on. If it is on make a note of what color it is and how it is flashing. Usually green indicates a working model, and some other color represents some kind of internal failure.

Sadly, the 5300 does not have fishfinder/depth capability.
If you require it, the link below is for the owners manual for your unit.

Can i put lowrance 5hdi sounder and a lowrange sounder/gps 7hdi on the same transponder unit?

If you want to use two head units off of 1 transducer the answer is yes. You will require a transducer switch that allows you to select which head unit receives the sonar signal.
If you want to swap head units utilizing the same transducer the answer is also yes you can do that.

Lowrance troubleshooting

Pay attention if depth readings shift during times when moving from spot to spot at higher speeds. If this is the case then you have air bubbles disrupting your sonar signal causing inaccurate readings or a loss of bottom lock for the unit. If over this weeds in shallow water, this at times creates havoc with sonar readings because of the wide variance of signal returns.
check the voltage at the head unit. You should have a minimum of 11.7 volts. 12.5 to 13.5 is optimal
lower power input can affect the overall performance of your unit.

How do i find water depth

Water depth should show automatically on your sonar page.
if it does not then either you have selected "stop sonar" under your sonar options or you have opted to turn off the depth displayou so the numbers don't show up.
if you areally viewing your GPS or split screen sonar/GPS page, sometimes the depth display is not visible on these pages unless you specifically instruct the unit to display it.

Proper set up for lowrance sonar

Where do you use your boat?

There are so many variables it's hard to fit it all here, but there are some excellent tutorials on the Lowrance website. The most important thing is to pick the right frequency, for the depth of the water. (200khz for less than 70', and 50 khz for greater depths). Depending on how serious you are about fishing, there are a lot of extras that you may never use. The key is to figure out which features will help you the most and forget about the rest.

You may also get some help at this link: FixYa Service Directory

It's common for SONAR to lose contact with the bottom at high speeds. The better the transducer installation, the faster you can go. Turbulence and bubbles will cause the SONAR to drop out. Lowrance's transducer installation guide explains it very clearly.
