Refrigerator is making a high pitch noise for about 10 seconds; Sounds like the compressor is humming about every 5 minutes or so - a short cycling. what is the problem? does the refrigerator need to be...
If it is the compressor, generally it means it is too expensive to replace. Generally, and I mean generally, a compressor costs between 350-650 to replace. That would include parts labor, gas recharge, gas recovery (Enviormental requirement). If your unit is a lessor expensive unit, then of course, junk it.... But if it is 3-6 years old and one of the more expensive units, then it might be good to replace the compressor. It is doubtful you could end up with two bad compressors in a row.
Another possiblity is you could have a cooling fan going out. This blows on the coils under the machine. You will have to camp out on the machine with a flash light and see where the noise is coming from.
Should you choose keep it and to fix it; keep the unit vacuumed out every Spring, this will prepare it for the heat that is going to be generated every summer, even if the house is air conditioned. In this case for sure, Cleanleness Is Next To Godleness. Heat is a major destroyer of the all appliances, especially REFER's.
