The motherboard is probably on it's last legs. For the price of buying a new motherboard, you can get a whole new computer, so that's the best option now.

It sounds like a hardware problem. It could be due to overheating or a faulty port or connection. Do you find that the computer suddenly powers off? Do you have very frequent application crashes of Blue Screens?

Normally, when the fan gets loud and races, it means that the CPU is getting too hot. The normal fault is that the case and ventilation block on the CPU is full of dust.

Disconnect the tower and take it outside or somewhere where a bit of a mess isn't a problem. Open the tower and look inside. Is it full of dust?

Using a dry soft bristle paint brush, CAREFULLY liberate any dust and fluff, if you have a hoover, brush to the hoover to remove dust.

The CPU is under a big metal blob with a fan on the top, Underneath the fan there are a load of ventilation duct in a metal block. See if you can clean them out, compressed air in a can is a good way. In conjunction with the brush.

Check all the vents and fans are clear of dust, including the PSU.

Once done, try it again, does it still race / lockup / close down.

If so, then you may need to renew the heat dispersal grease which is placed between the CPU and the Heat sink (Vented metal block under the fan).

The best place to find how to do that is look on Youtube for CPU changing / fitting / upgrading.

8400 dell hold power switch to get started

If it still acts up, compare wiring of the large motherboard Molex connector to the original. Dell used a variant that does not interchange. The enable wire is in a different location from standard ATX location.

If the processor is an AMD, remove cbattery and clear BIOS, and then try again.

Can not get computer to power back up no lights on front o rear just little light on mother board have dell 8400

Bad Power Supply, sscorbett.

Usually you have enough power to light LED lights, (Like the harddrive activity LED light for add-in cards, that you see on the motherboard), and spin fans, but Not enough power to turn the Processor on.

harddrive activity light for add-in cards (SCSI LED)

The Dimension 8400 comes with an ATX style of Power Supply, that has a maximum rated Wattage of 250 Watts.
1) ALL of the LED lights combined use less than 1 Watt of power.
2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts
3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts.

Your Power Supply just has enough power to light that LED light.
Weak voltage power rail.
Replace the Power Supply.

[ There are three power rails inside that SMPS.
Switched-Mode Power Supply.

1) The 3.3 Volt power rail
2) The 5 Volt power rail
3) The 12 Volt power rail ]

The ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to the size, and shape of the case, for one.
Approximately 6 inches Wide, 5.5 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall.
The ATX power supply case in the Dimension 8400 however, is shorter in length.
It is 4 inches Long. (Depth)

Reference for the case size, and power cables needed,

Scroll down to see the connectors of the various power cables needed.

You may have a Power Supply with these dimensions, and needed power cables, in an unused computer.
Perhaps someone has upgraded to a better computer, and has an unused computer that you can temporarily borrow the Power Supply for a test unit.

Make sure it has at least 250 Watts (Maximum rated wattage), plus,

1) 20-pin ATX main power cable. (Or a 20 + 4-pin ATX main power cable)

[ 20 + 4-pin ATX main power cable,

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable

Plus the various power cables needed for the Harddrive, optical drive/s, and computer case fan/s, if it/they do not connect to the motherboard.

First use the following steps:

Turn off the system and disconnect power cables
Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds.
Reconnect power cables and try to turn it on.

If it remains same, the next step will be to:
Turn off the system and disconnect power cables

Dell Dim 8400 Issues

Hi Steve,
The problem that you are facing is most likely because of bad harddrive. As you have already replaced the RAM. To confim the same , run a diagnostics on the Hardrive. You can run the same in two ways .

Check if have the utilitu partision still left on the hardrive
1. Tap on the F12 key 5 - 6 times when you see the Dell splash screen , before windows starts to load.
2. Select Hardrive diagnostics or IDE diagnostics

If the above is no there , look for the dell Rescouce cd
1. Boot the system using the dell Resource Cd.
2. Select 32 bit diagnostics from the menu
3. Run a custom test on the hdd.

If the hardrive fails , replace the same, otherwise try swaping it connector cable with the optical cable.

Thanks

PC Power Problem

a64116f.jpg08c1cf0.jpgef4690e.jpgI also have a Dell 8400 heat problem . I know the problem ! I own a $1000.00 plus Raytek laser temp gun . I had some problems and started to read about all of the Dell 8400/4400 over heating problems . I out my new heat gun and started to test the temps. on the inside of my Dell 8400 ! Socket 775,Mobo Dell 0J3492,800 Bus,Bios A09.

The non-fan Radeon x300 card was 105-115.3 F after one hour !
The heat sinks over the chipset was the big problem . 107.8-124.6f after just one hour! The P4 cpu was 93-104f .
I am very lucky to have the laser temp gun I have .

The fix . I have all kinds of old fans and hard drive coolers from computers I have trashed over the years . I got new 40mm/10mm fans on the way from the bay . I had to use some old worn out fans 40mm fans to hold me over .I ordered a new video card also . THEY WORKED ! My temps dropped down to 82-85f on the chip set and video card after running the fans

I hope this helps .36b34e9.jpg
