(If this is a Windows-based OS) What you need to do is either download one of three free apps. The first two I really recommend, the third simply strips the DVD of it's region and creates two sets of files that you can use other software to create a new, region-less DVD.

You can use Nero, Roxio or ironically, actually use one of the first two Applications (for Windows) I recommend. That's why depending on your use, I recommend the first two over the third. If you want to take DVD and use a standard DVD-R to burn it to and make it region-less, the Application you want is called DVD Shrink.
It's called "Shrink" because commercially purchased or rented DVDs show that they are 9 GBs, which would require a DVD-DL or Dual Layer. Very expensive, almost $5-$10/blank disc depending on where you are & the DVD burner has to be DVD-DL capable.
In order to get a DVD down to a standard blank DVD-R (or +R, both of which you can buy for cheap on the big 25, 50 or 100 count spindles) which holds roughly 5 GB of data, DVD Shrink will get rid of all the useless empty space that DVD manufacturers put on their discs to make it look like it's 9GB of data (it's not, it's an illusion).
So basically it compacts all the data next to each other like moving all you shirts on the hangars in your closet close together, off to one side, thus opening up a load of new space to hang other clothes up.
Once you run DVD Shrink you pick the source DVD or .avi/DiVX/mp4/.mkv file (you can use DVDs or video files from Torrent sites w/ both of the top two, but not the third Application, that one is strictly DVD use only and still requires other software to make is burn onto a blank DVD.) DVD Shrink will analyze the DVD, which takes about 5 minutes, and you can see a little preview of what it's seeing, but moves faster if you un-check "show preview" during "Analysing" phase (it was developed by a Brit, thus the "S" and not "Z" in Analysing Phase. Once it's done Analysing you can use help to show you how go into "Re-Author" to remove parts of the DVD you don't want (like Spanish subtitles if you don't speak Spanish), but the fastest way is to click the "Backup!" button at the top and it will take the files is created and show a dialogue box to verify the burner, or if you want to burn it as an .iso file you can choose that. Make sure you have a folder created for where these files go. Mine is simply called "DVDs to Burn" and it's on a drive that has the appropriate free space. After that, it will begin burning your new DVD w/ no region on it.
The second Application I would recommend and will conver the DVD or video file (I use this one more for video files to convert and burn to DVD, but it will accept DVDs. This Application is Called "Convert X to DVD". It does basically what DVD Shrink does only allows eay changing of your DVD menu, etc. But I would recommend Convert X to DVD for .avi movie files or.mpg/.mp4/.mkv over a DVD. DVDs I generally go to DVD Shrink.
However Convert to X to DVD has a few more options to customize what you're burning & I suggest using the same folder you've created for the files for DVD Shrink. When you start the convert, it will do the same thing and in the output folder (DVDs to Burn, or whatever you want to name it) you will see the same two Folders: "VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS". These are the files these two programs use to create your "Backup DVD" and the third application makes the exact same files and provided you select that as your location for output files they will go to that folder.
With Convert X to DVD, you can choose to either automatically delete these "TS" files from your output directory. I do not believe DVD Shrink has that option. But if you don't have them automatically deleted to you will need to go to My Computer and go to your output directory and delete the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders, A) because they are taking up 5 GB of your space and B) the burning programs want to write there as well and they all use the generic VIDEO_TS, etc. folders.
Remember to empty the recycle bin, if it doesn't say "this is too big to send to Recycle Bin, do you want to permanently delete the folder?" (Which you say Yes to), because until you empty the recycle bin, you wont get those 5 GB of space free. Of course if the program says "There are already files in that folder , do you want to delete them?" You say "Yes" and it will automatically remove them re-write what's being converted. I just err on the side of caution and manually delete the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders and empty the recycle bin anyway. And with DVD Shrink, you can use the Open Files option at the top to pick the folder that your file decrypter/region is creating these VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders ro, and it will do the Analysing stage and then you click "Backup!" and there you go.
If you simply want to read the region and strip it to make it region-less, use the third program called "DVD Decrypter". It was show you the region and give you options to either make it Region 1 (N. America) or make it region-less. It only works with DVDs, no video files and it too will create VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders in the directory you select. So deleting them immediately is bad.
You want make sure you use one of other two Applications, or Nero first, before deleting them like of DVD Shrink where is says "Open Files" and select your output folder where it will Analyze, etc. I also believe Convert X to DVD also will do this as well.
The reason I am throwing in the 3rd Application when you have two other options that seem to do it all, is b/c the do it all Applications can possibly skip something and make a bad burn (although rare). Whereas DVD Decrypter ONLY does that and then you can use the other two Applications or Nero to pick the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders and then burn it to a simple/cheap 5GB blank DVD that has no region and can be played from here in Kentucky, to Mongolia, to the Antarctic. I personally have all 3, just in case one program won't decrypt the region, but others will.

I hope this helps you and the three Applications I spoke of, DVD Shrink, Convert X to DVD or DVD Decrypter are all freeware so you won't have to pay a thing for them. And I "back up" my entire DVD library so my DVDs don't get used, their official copies do. My laptop only plays some dvds

You player is locked to a particular region and cannot play DVD from other regions unless the player is made Region Free or you install a Region Free program.

To changethe Region code on your DVD player, open Control Panel - System - Hardware -Device manager, and click on DVD/CD ROM drives, then right click on the DVDdrive and click Properties then click on DVD Region.
You can enter a new region and it also shows you how many changes have beenmade.
NOTE you can make only 4 changes and the player will lock permanently on the4th change.
If you want to play DVDs from any region you maybe able to upgrade the firmwareto make it region free BUT if you make a mistake or installed the wrongfirmware the player will be a piece of junk.
The best solution to make the player region free is to install a piece ofsoftware (Passkey for DVD) that allows you to play DVDs from any region andPasskey for Blu-ray that allows you to play Blu-rays from any region. There areseveral available on the Internet but my favourite is DVD-Region Free From:-

Dell n5010 dvd drive does not recognise dvd but will play cd's

Does this happen on all DVDs and CDs or only on some DVDs?
If this is happens on all DVDs then this drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If it only occurs on some DVDs then check the region code on the DVD player and the region code on the DVD, the region codes must match.
To play DVDs from any region the player needs to be a region free player or you need to install a region free program on your notebook/computer.

I want to make my hts3555 play dvds from europe

Greetings,
You will need to reset the region, preferably to region free so you can watch dvds from anywhere. Follow these directions:
Press "Door Open"
- after the door opens perform the following sequence with the remote control:

Press STOP-7-3-4-4-6-6

a Region settings page will be displayed showing the current region on the TV (usually the default is region 1), using the remote control up/down keys select the region number you'd like to use (select region 0 for region free) and press OK.

Power off and restart.
Take Care,
-WN

Can only play DVDs for one region code.

Most DVDs can only play DVDs from a single region. However, they sometimes allow you to change the region at least one time. Another option is to make your DVD player region free. This is a hack that can be performed. Once you do this, you can play DVDs from any region.
