You can check if it is the remote itself by using a digital camera or cell phone camera. Point the remote control towards the lens of the camera like you are taking a picture of what is being transmitted. Start pressing buttons on the remote, if you see a blinking light on the LCD screen of the camera, then the remote is transmitting correctly. If not, replace the batteries in the remote. If this does not fix it, you need a new remote.
If the Remote is transmitting properly, then it is either the IR sensor inside the TV or the main board. There is no easy way to check this without taking the TV apart. This can only be checked by the verifying the voltages along the line, you would need a technician to work on it unless if you have a voltmeter, the service manual and an basic understanding of how circuits work.

Now days a lot of these sets come with the display and controller boards attached in one package, and usually is not cost effective. Cheaper to get new television. Be sure to buy a top quality surge protector to protect your next tv from electrical surges. Spend at least $200.00 or more. Best buy has some good ones too. Radio shack has some but not as high quality as most.

SOURCE: I have a Sony Bravia
I'm sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing in turning OFF the Demo mode. Press and hold the HOME button located on the front of the TV until the message Demo Mode: off appears on the screen.
If it doesn't resolve, please follow the below steps to perform a reset of the TV and it should resolve the issue.
Thanks for understanding. Please let me know if you require any clarifications.
