To turn off your mic, you need to mute it in your Sound settings.
To do this, if you have the icon in the bottom-right of your screen, you can right click on the little speaker, select Recording Devices. In the window that pops up, select your mic and right click and hit disable.

My Mic is on all the time it is also coming through the speakers so when i turn external speakers on there is an huge feedback

See Adjust volume below

To use any microphone with your computer you will need to enable it in control panel. Instructions are for Windows XP but are similar for Vista and Win7

Click START, CONTROL PANEL, SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICES

Click VOICE

In Sounds & Audio Devices Properties window locate SOUND PLAYBACK box. Click VOLUME button. Make sure that there is not a check-mark in the MUTE box against microphone in the list of devices and the volume slider is at the top of the scale.

Ensure the MUTE ALL box isn't checked before closing window.

Click VOLUME button in SOUND RECORDING BOX. Here SELECT microphone as an input source for recording (as opposed to un-checking mute in the playback controls).

NOTE if microphone is not listed in the 2 sets of volume controls click OPTIONS, PROPERTIES on the tool-bar and place a check against microphone in the list entitled 'show the following volume controls' and then click OK. The same applies to 'Internal MIC' if you are using a laptop with built in microphone - this must be enabled/ disabled separately to the external MIC.

To adjust audio volume.

Under VOLUME tab adjust Device Volume as necessary. Also (under Loudpeaker Settings) click Speaker Volume and adjust slider to suit.

You can also put a check mark in the box to show the volume control icon on the Task Bar so you can go straight to it to in future

I just bought a new gigaware earclip monoheadset with mic. the problum is i cant seem to get the mic working the sound works great but i just cant get that voice to work

Hello Mithmar hi, try setting the volume for your microphone, (i'm assuming you are using X P) to do this right click the speaker icon (or the mixer icon) on the lower right side of your screen, you will go to the volume controls section, goto options, then properties, select recording. check the microphone, then click apply/ok. On the mixer there is now the microphone slider. Test your microphone by loading the sound recorder program (start, all programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder, press the red button) then shout to the microphone, you should see wave patterns on the recorder, your microphone is working fine. at this point let me know your progress.

Downloaded skype. I can receive and hear the calling party, but they are unable to hear me.

This is the issue regarding the Internal Microphone in the Computer.
Your contacts cannot hear you, until you have enabled the Microphone in the Computer.
You will find the information to enable the Microphone below:
Windows XP:
1) Double-click on the Volume Control. 2) Select the "Properties" option from the "Options" menu. 3) Select the "Recording" option in the "Adjust volume for" section. Click the OK button. Check the box labeled "Select" under the microphone volume and you should now be able to adjust the volume for the microphone.

Windows Vista:

1) Right Click the Volume Icon at the bottom right corner of your screen [The Task bar]. 2) Click [Playback Devices]. 3) Right Click the [Speakers] Icon and click Properties. 4) Click the [Levels] Tab; and there you will see the Microphone Volume slider (The one at the very bottom of the "HD Audio output" and "PC Beep" sliders where you can un-mute the mic playback.

Windows 7:
1) Click on Start (the Windows icon) and type sound. 2) Click on Sound under Control Panel. 3) Click on Recording tab. Select Microphone and click on Properties. 4) Click on Levels tab. The default Microphone Boost is set to 0. Increase it. 5) Close all the dialog boxes, and the microphone will be ready for use.

Hope this helps.

DR-VX1, No sound comes out, fresh out of the box

There is a setting on your computer that will give you a Mic boost. Here is how you set it. Double click on the little speaker icon on your taskbar at the bottom right of your screen. The volume control window will open. Click on options then properties. Next check the small round recording button. Now make sure the microphone box is checked then click ok. Now a window will open that will show your microphone recording level. You can turn that recording level up using that slider. To give your Mic a boost click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the Recording Control Window. Then at the bottom of the next Window check the Mic Boost box. This should give your Mic a little more kick and you can lower the mic recording level using the slider if your recordings become distorted.. Good luck with this and I hope I have been helpful.

My internal microphone doesn't work

If you are refering to the internal microphone on your computer then try this. Open up your windows sound recorder from Start - Program - Accesories - Entertainment. Hit the record button and talk or yell something if you would like. You should see recorded sound waves in the middle of your sound recorder. If you do not see the recorded waves this might mean that your microphone is turned off. To turn it on just Double click on the little speaker icon on your taskbar at the bottom right of your screen. The volume control window will open. Click on options then properties. Next check the small round recording button. Now make sure the microphone box is checked then click ok. Now a window will open that will show your microphone recording level. Move the slider up about half way and make sure to check the small "Select" box near the bottom of the slider. Open up sound recorder and try to record again. If this does not work your internal microphone may not be working or your computer may not have come with a built in microphone. There are some very cheap external mics on the market that sound very good. If you are doing any serius recording you may want to invest in a USB microphone. The USB mic should come with it's own software and setup should be pretty simple. I hope I have been helpful.
