The leads to the motor need to be reversed. Since the batteries are being charged that part should be OK. I don't think the batteries could hold any charge if that part were reversed; the batteries would probably explode.
I have 6v chargers with alligator clips on the end that work, you'll just have to remove the plastic battery cover (6 screws) so that you can clip it onto the battery
