Question about GE Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have a stainless GE profile PSS26SGPASS side by side fridge and suddenly the freezer and fridge wont hold the temp settign I put. The fan works, the controls work to lower the temp setting but it isn't cooling or freezing. THis happened once before a month ago but it correctd itself when I pushed Turbo cool for the fridge and adjusted the freezer temp. Now both digital controls can be pushed and adjusted, however, the unit isnt lowering the internal temps.

fridge is about 7 years old. I have the freezer set at -2 to try to cool it, but actual temp is 28...the fridge is set on Turbo Cool, but actual is 41. Both temps have bben set since last night with no actual cooling or temp drop happening. Turbo Cool fan is working and blowing

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

    Any luck srmiller82??

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

The freezer has held its temp give or take 1 degree overnight, but essentially yes it has held. When I open the freezer the fan is running and you can feel the air blowing out of the louvers located in the back wall of the interior of the freezer.

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

no frost, seems to be defrosted, no icicles refreezing

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

Do you mean the bottom panel exposing the compressor and condensor coil, or the ENTIRE back?? This problem came up about a month or 3 weeks ago, the temps went up, but i simply hit the Turbo Cool button for the fridge and lowered the setting temp on the freezer and it went back to normal overnight. This time seems it will not.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

I would concur with smiler after seeing everything that you guys have been chatting about...
You probably have a refrigerant leak, it is a very small one or in other words very slow, so the problem developed over a long period of time until now it will longer adequately cool...
The fix will probably be more costly then the fridge is worth....
Start shopping...but get the one with the least amount of bells and whistles that you can still be satisfied with...the bells and whistles are just more to go wrong, and add $$ to the price...

HI has the temp held steady at 28? And do you notice if the fan in running in the freezer if you open the door do you hear a fan running, if you do not, then the problem is a bad control board located in the rear of the refigerator behind an small access panel this control board runs about 175-200.00 to buy.

These are very common problems on these units, I am a GE employee, there is a 90% chance that is your problem.

The freezer has esssentially maintained its temp overnight, give or take 1 degree, mst likely from opening and checking status etc. When you open the freezer, you can hear the fan running and feel the air blowing from the louvers in the back of the freezer on the interior. Fan is definitely running.

Do you see frost on the back wall?

  • Sean Miller Mar 26, 2011

Also did you notice ice cicles melting and refreezing at any point in the freezer?

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

no frost, seems defrosted, and no icicles

  • Sean Miller Mar 26, 2011

Ok sir well I was leaning towards a contrrol board but if that temp stays there after several days this sounds like a sealed system problem possibly a leak or restriction, the only way to be sure confirm somewhat would be to remove the freezer rear panel and check the frost on your coils tell me what you see.

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

There does not seem to be a way to remove the ENITRE back panel, as besides the lower smaller panels exposing the compressor/condensor coil, and the small control board panel, there are no other exterior screws to remove any more of the back of the fridge.

  • Sean Miller Mar 26, 2011

No this is inside the freezer you take the shelves out and that back panel has screws in it, I would still lean towards a bad board, our sealed system failure is around 2% very rare to have problems, we have boards of this age go back all the time. But the board is kind of pricey. But yes the panel is inside the refigerator there is another set of coils in there we are looking for them to have a little frost and be really cold to the touch, they will have to have some frost being that its 28 in there.

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

Took off the back panel inside the interior of the FREEZER, and no frost on the coils any longer. Temp is of course now up to 37 but door has been open to remove food and shelves etc. But the coils(which are like wire brush) have no frost at all. Not cold to the touch wither.

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

At the bottom of the coils, where the copper meets the stainless tubing and starts the coils, before the "wire" brush surrounding the coiling tube starts, the actual stainless coil tube is cool, sort of cold to the touch, but the wire brushy material surrounding the coils for the whole back is not cold whatsoever to the touch. If that makes sense...

  • Sean Miller Mar 26, 2011

Ok sir, this sounds like bad news , this looks like a sealed system problem more than likely a leak in the evaporator. This would require service from a licensed repair center to do deal with the freon would cost 450-750.00......

    Sean

  • bcharles5 Mar 26, 2011

and even beyond that I would still have a leak correct? I mean if the unit is recharged with coolant, but it has a leak, wont it eventually keep leaking without the actual leak being repaired? How much to repair a leak(ballpark) if they indeed can even locate it?

  • Sean Miller Mar 26, 2011

If its leaking in the evaporator the leak cant be repaired, but you can replaced the evaporator around the price i quoted you, i do these all thet time under warranty. Usually most people will not pay 500 and up to fix a fridge.

You probably have a sensor issues there are two one for the freezer one for the frig. Check your freezer temp it should be at 0 degress at manufactor setting. If the temp is below -10 you freezer sensor is bad. Otherwise your frig sensor is bad. CHECK FREEZER FIRST!!!

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp. The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

My GE profile side by side refrigerator's temperature is not staying where I put it. It keeps popping to 31 degrees when I set it for 37 degrees. My food is freezing !!

It may need to defrost. Shut it off for 4-5 hours to let any accumulated ice to defrost and see what happens.

There also is a control that directs more cooling to the refridgerator or the freezer compartment. It may need to be readjusted. It will take 24 hours to stabilize.

Water was frozen all inside the freezer and fridge temp was high

Self defrost mechanism may have an issue. If it stays on too long you will have excessive temps build up in refrig as well as freezer. There is also a defrost thermostat that is supposed to turn compressor back on when temps get too high - check that out also.
