It is never a good idea to shorten a chain, if it has stretced that bad you need to replace it, or it will snap, the chain does not have a joiner, you would need to break the chain, and re rivet a new pre set tie strap.

I need to take out some links in the chain on a liftmaster garage door opener. How do I do this? It is about 20 months old.

Two ways!

On the cable section of the chain use a cable shorten-er.

On the chain remove excess chain and install a master link/

How do I shorten my Ice watch strap?

mcdevito75 here, I imagine you mean a Band (metal) they can be shortened by removeing links from the band itself, you"ll need a specific tool called a link remover tool. they are available on ebay. However by the time you get the tool and the time to do the work, and if you don"t do any work on watches, the best bet is to look for a small watch repair shop in your area to remove these links. Hold onto the removed links for later replacement. If it"s a Strap (material) on your watch, say, leather, rubber etc. simply cut the excess strap at an angle with scissors.

How to shorten watchband

It all depends on the style of the band.
Go to where the links are all the same size, not tapered at all.
If you have a stretch band, along the edge, unbend the flaps that hold what look liks tiny staples. Pull out what you need removed and put the remailing pieces together.
If you have a non-stretch band, grab a SMALL paperclip about 1/8" from the end. Along the edge of the band you will see the pins that hold it together. Have someone hold the band with the bottom edge of the pin you are removing, over an opening. Between 2 hardback books wirks great. Tap the pliers to drive the pin partially out. Pull it out and do the same to remove as many links as needed. Put the pins back in, in the same direction they came out, from the same side they came out.

How do I shorten the watchband to fit my wrist?

If you turn the band inside out...and stretch it...you will see either 2 or 4 small tabs per section. Use a jewelers screwdriver to lift up each tab per section and slide that section out. Now it will be easy to take other sections out as you won't have to maintain pressure on the band. Reassembly is reverse order.

Changin chain on 2002 honda shadow ace

Unless you are changing sprocket sizes you can not shorten the chain because removing even one link would not allow the ends to connect. Are you adjusting the chain as needed? Why do you want to shorten it?

Even if the factory chain has no master link (some are continuous these days) you can still grind off two pins carefully and push out a link to remove the chain, or simply cut it. That is what you must do when replacing the chain.
