Question about Rheem 50 Gallon FVR NATGAS Water Heater 6YR 22V50F1
I just had the same experience and was told to tighten the Thermal couple connection at the control. The thermal couple is the copper line that runs to the pilot light and senses flame. When there is no flame it will not allow gas through the valve. I'm told that sometimes it is not tight enough and the user will suffer the circumstances that you describe here.
It can be tightened with a pair of channel locks or a small adjustable wrench.
