My seagate external hard drive power supply adapter had shotcircut, will my external hard disk which is 1 tb will work?

Usually there is a diode in place to prevent spurious voltage reaching the hard drive. Replacing the power supply may work. I would replace the whole enclosure.

Seagate raw drive

Your data is already gone. The drive is raw. No partition no format.
here is a link to a free data recovery program, this probably wont work but may be worth a try

just be sure to opt out of all garbage they want to infest your computer with.

sounds like you are using win7 64bit maybe? if so then there is your problem, since win 7 came out it has had driver issues with any type of external drive being recconized. Sometimes they work others not at all. If this is your problem, check out windows for their patch(works for some, but not all, worth a try). Another option is to check to see if there is a driver update for your specific type of PC/Mac from the seagate website, and that may solve it for you.

Hi, please anyone feel free to register on the site that the link takes you to so you can see the thread, it shows a link from You Tube on how to take the Seagate apart so anyone with the problem with the unit just making beep sounds and not being reconized by their P.C.
As all the threads i saw like my 1st thread reporting about my friends Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB asking about his problem and no-one was getting replies, and they where getting frustrated, I decided to find out. Someone has replied to my other thread with the same answer as taking it apart and connecting it to a P.C. So to help others who need their important files from the external HardDrive I have made a step by step guide so even novice P.C. users like myself can attempt to sort it out without being charged loads $-£ etc.. It seems unfair for all these users to buy something new and with in 1 week - 2 months it fails and they have important files etc.. stuck on the HardDrive and being charge to retrieve it. I'm not looking to cause any trouble just want to help others out. http://www.yo-lid.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=84 You will find the thread in 'Technical ' under 'General Technical Issues ' please let me know how you get on thanks.

Connect the 320GB HDD before switching ON the laptop and try to repair using scandisk option to repair the drive. Also use chkdsk /f option in command line mode.

Revert back for more assistance.

Installation issue - Not recognizing

hmm, no problem plugging in either side, just be sure to do the power cable first. What's doing the beep, beep?

Found a guy who had similar prob, here was his solution:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not, check the device list for any Free Agent device, double click and check driver. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting, plug in the power cord. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)
Seagate Tools…the new version….does not recognize to diagnose the Free Agent….
I have not tried Seagate Tools after getting the computer to recognize the drive.
I am surprised Seagate does not provide a Tool to recognize their own drives…and install and/or test Free Agent.

This does work for me with Vista. Thought I had lost the drive…. Seagate should provide a patch or a drive that Windows will recognize when you get the “found new hardware” and Windows asks you to insert manufacturer’s installation disk. I do not understand why that is not already there….a driver file for Free Agent...that Windows would install.

I did not buy Pro….because I did not need the backup software. I wonder if those who bought Pro are having these problems.

Seagate freeagent 500g usb 2.0 beeps sound

I am so happy to say that i HAD the exact same problem.
Its an issue with the drive disk itself. Long story short because i dropped the drive the the disk was no longer able to spin fast enough to start the drive (the beeping sound actually being the disk trying to start spinning.
After spending literally the last 4-5 hours looking for a solution I found a unusual method that basically either works, or it doesn't there's no it kind of works. what you need to do is unplug the drive, then plug it back in and start Vigorously spinning it whilst keeping the drive horizontal (similar to what you would do when your unscrewing a light bulb).
You have to try and do so simultaneously with the beep and it should "kick start" the drive (AND OBVIOUSLY DON'T LET THE WIRE DROP OUT AS YOUR SPINNING IT AS YOUR COMPUTER WONT RECOGNISE IT IF ITS NOT PLUGGED IN).
I Know this method sounds far fetched but put it this way, 15mins ago I was working out how im gonna get hundreds of pounds to restore this drive, Now, i've just finished copying my informations onto a laptop from the drive so i can take this piece of plastic **** back to the shop :D.......
Never again Seagate and Thank God for letting me find a solution.
