I had this exact same issue with a TEAC VCR a couple of years ago. The problem was the mode switch/loading motor. A new loading belt and new mode switch fixed the problem.

In this case, I would be pretty sure the mode switch is not allowing the mechanism to fully load correctly, hence the 'error' on the display. A new mode switch is inexpensive as a part by itself, but the labour involved by a workshop to fit and align it to the mechanism to it could be costly, but you can always obtain a quote beforehand; that way you can decide if it is worth getting the VCR fixed (because it is a combo unit with DVD player, I can totally understand this). As long as the DVD part works fine, you can go ahead with a workshop repair on the VCR, since this is a straightforward issue which is fixable.

It is up to you, you can always say no if the repair quote/labour cost is likely to exceed the value of the unit.

The good news is this 'error' with the VCR is easy to correct - in a workshop by a qualified technician. I don't recommend that you attempt to service this unit yourself unless you have considerable experience with electro-mechanical devices such as VCRs. These are complex machines, and the alignment of such requires an expert with service manuals, adequate stock of spare parts, and all the necessary equipment to do this properly. Hence why I suggest the quote.

You could clean the mode switch with an aerosol electronic cleaner (available from places like Radio Shack), but this will not last very long and is not reliable. Whenever this issue occurs, and the switch is found to be the culprit, it must be replaced/mech. re-aligned/re-timed; since these are not cleanable items as they develop high resistance on their internal contacts.

Fingers crossed that it is a cheap enough repair overall.

Hi i am getting error "Er:03" on the VCR screen. Cant FF/RW/play/eject.

Possibility of mechanism fault inside the VCR, which might include tape damage. Can't answer directly about the 03 code, without knowing make or model number as they all use different fault codes.
Taking the top cover off might show up what's happened.

Tape Stuck

I've checked the entire user manual which notes problems like this need to be referred to authorized service personnel. Myself, I would unplug the entire unit, put it on a kitchen table using a phillips (cross-tip) screwdriver to remove the top metal shell. Remove at least 2 screws each side and 2-5 rear screws securing the top. Nothing like peering inside to see what is causing the VCR to get stuck and help remove it. No release pinhole or tape freeing ejector will work if the unit's tape is tightly wound around some internal object or the tape is stuck because something foreign is inside the unit. I experience problems with my VCR. A tape got stuck. After I removed the tape, it comes up with an error message F03

If you have children who can access the machine, unplug it, turn it upside down and listen for any rattles or loose bits inside. Kids are notorious for 'posting' coins, half eaten snacks and the like into the 'letter box'. Any loose objects, particularly metal, MUST be removed before switching on again. If a tape has become damaged, bits left inside the machine, it will have to opened up to remove the debris and ensure that the tape transport path including all rollers etc are cleared.

Vcr says that there is a tape inside of the vcr when there isn't

Most VCR's do have a sensor system inside. It consists of what looks like a bar that is standing up right in the middle of the area the tape sits down into, and sensors on one or both sides of the tape bay that detect this source. The source is usually an infrared diode, and it is most likely this diode that has malfunctioned. I would checjk to see if anything has gotten inside that might be blocking this sensor, if not then the diode probably needs replaced.

Error Code F03

What worked for us when we saw F03? Taking the toothbrush out of the VCR! I kept resetting the unit and nothing worked. Finally, I decided to see what would happen if I stuck a tape in. It wouldn't go in because of the toothbrush! I took it out, reset the unit again and it was fixed.

Maybe the error is not F03, but FO3 meaning there is a FOREIGN OBJECT stuck in the VCR.

Hold down the power button (or the vcr button if on a combination remote) for six seconds. This will unlock the child lock feature of the vcr.

Error message E4 and stuck tape

Yes with care. Simply remove the cover and with care unwrap the tape. If you must break the tape - but make sure all residual tape is cleanly removed. Re assemble and put a tape head cleaner through- following the instructions.

Why does the VCR ejects my tape?

The VHS PlayPak adaptor uses 1 AA battery. When you place your VHS-C tape into the adaptor and close the cover, you will hear the motor running and the red piece on the adapter will move inside. Check the placement of the battery and make sure the clear shrink-wrap has been removed from the battery.
