Question about Sharp R-1200 Microwave Oven

2 Answers

Hi. I have a Sharp Carousel R 1200. 7 years old. It's started sporadically arcing. But there's no metal in the microwave! It's arced on popcorn, hot dogs on a paper plate, melting chocolate, etc. Now there's a burned place (almost a hole) in the silver plate-looking rectangle on the inside right of the unit (below left of the light). Can you tell me why and do I need a new microwave? Thanks!

Thanks, LedSled. Can I use the microwave when it's not arcing? Or do I need to buy one immediately?

Thanks, ledsled. I hope I can find a good replacement for it - I loved that microwave!

I was afraid I'd get that advice. But better safe than sorry...

The cover is a Wave guide cover and behind this cover are critical components. The arc is caused by a defective component called a magnetron. The magnetron creates the wave pulses that cook and heat during oven operation. At this point, it would be much cheaper to replace the microwave.
I would not recommend servicing or removing the cover yourself. There is a high voltage capacitor that stores high electrical current that can cause severe shock or injury.

I would not use the appliance with an electrical arc. It may overheat eventually and can cause a fire.

That sounds like a major fire hazard waiting to happen...
I would replace the unit immediately, and not even attempt repair on this unit!

Hi. Our 1 1/2 year old Sharp KB6524PS Microwave Drawer: While cooking oatmeal, at start of cycle, the microwave started arcing, then smoking. Shut off at 15 seconds. Microwave-safe china used.

I expect the arcing came from the waveguide cover or aerial cover having either a crack or carbonised food particles on it.
A new cover may affect a cure if the magnetron is not damaged.

I have a Sharp Carousel Microwave R-1460A. The disk on the ceiling, opposite the warming plate and about the same size, has severe burn marks (probably from food splatters). Any idea what that part is

see this indication and fix it. God bless you
  1. Waveguide coverSparking and arcing in a microwave can be caused by a damaged waveguide cover. Try removing the waveguide cover to see if the problem persists. Once removed, the waveguide cover can be inspected for burns, which will indicate if this is the issue. If the waveguide cover is burnt or will not stay in the proper spot it will need to be replaced.
  2. Cavity/Rack supportIf sparking or arcing in your microwave is near a rack support, any exposed metallic area can be covered with a microwave cavity support. It is also recommended to replace the rack supports in this situation to ensure the issue is resolved.
  3. Cavity paintIf sparking or arcing in the microwave is visible on the side walls, the paint covering the metallic areas could have worn off or chipped. This can possibly cause pitting in the side walls or ceiling. If this is the case, it can be repaired with microwave cavity pain

I think the problem is just coincidental to the lamp replacement.

i would say there is grease or food debris on the turntable support or turntable motor coupler.

The service manual is here and you can order parts from the Pros here.

Maybe. The presence of metallic material (foil, stainless steel silverware, etc.) in an operating microwave oven creates electric arcs between the foil and the inside wall of the oven. And this can destroy the electric components.

This is not good, the magnetron is arcing because metal is exposed, this will eventually destroy the magnetron making the oven useless. I strongly suggest it get looked at for safety and potential fire hazard.

After running for around 5-10 seconds, a large "spark" can be seen arcing inside the microwave accompanied by a "shorting out" sound.

It is the magnetron that is arcing and potentially very dangerous, the magnetron is failing or there is exposed metal or to much food particle build up. I suggest unplugging the unit and have it checked out for safety reasons.

My built in AEG electrolux microwave has started arcing (only 3 years old) and the flexible plate covering the stirrer appears to hve a tear in it - what can I do? I live in Northumberland, UK.

The plate should be an insulator and NOT causing the arcing.

Arcing is caused by EITHER not having enough food load with moisture content, OR using containers that have METAL in them INCLUDING bowls with metallic decorations or silvery/gold painting.
