Until you resolve the issue you might want to limit how many times you subject the speakers to those transients.

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Denon avr2312ci shuts off and blinks red

Yes that is why. The receiver is protecting itself from an un-stable load impedance which causes current/voltage spikes through the final amplifier components and proportionally through the input where the protection relay is (click),. Do not continue using the amp until you have repaired or replaced the blown speakers. A rule of thumb is to maintain 8 ohms on each speaker wire plugged into the amp. Keep that in mind or eventually you will damage it.

Denon avr 592 no sound

Hi,
First of all check all the speakers. Maybe all the speakers gone out because of the loud blast. Also check in the tuner mode. Is there is any sound. If there is some problem in the avr then it will show the fault and will go into protection mode.

You can check the speakers with a battery from any one of the remote. Take the leads of each speakers and connect the lead to the battery terminals. If the speaker is ok then it will make a small cracking sound each time when you connect its wire to the battery.

Red power light blinking on my denon avr 1907, tried reset procedure, no speakers hooked up now and it still goes from green light to blinking red light and shuts off...Any clues?

This is a protection mode. The receiver protection circuit detects an internal problem like missing power supply voltage or blown channel and shuts down the receiver. You need to bring the unit to a repair facility.

Whenever I start playing on my xbox or playstation, the receiver will shut off (the red light is blinking around the power button). Once I hit the button, it stops and then I can turn the receiver back...

does it only shut off on high volume or a loud noise?

It's the amp tripping to protect itself.

look out for a shorting speaker wire or faulty speaker etc. disconnect each in turn to find out which

Getting out of protect mode I have a Denon 787 receiver. It was working fine for 8 months. All of sudden, my reciever goes into protect mode after playing for about 30 min. Right after it goes into protect...

most of the receivers come with a cooling fan inside see if its working they usually work when you turn the volume up,, if its working that means you are playing it to loud if you lower the volume a little it will play just fine..( if the fan inside is not working thats the reason it goes into protect mode and it means you must have it repaired,, it goes into protect mode to prevent furter damage to the unit or the speakers,,

Denon AVR-1508 Receiver problems - cuts off and goes into protect mode

Usually when the unit runs for a while before shutting down there are two possibilities:

1) There is a small amount of DC current present that effectively heats up the speaker coils enough to cause a temporary short circuit that kicks in the protect circuit.
2) The output transistors or bias transistors are sensitive to heat and breaking down again causing the protect circuit to kick in.

A few experiments to try:

1) Does the time to shutdown change depending upon the volume level?
2) Is there any background noise coming from the speakers? Listen to a blank tape for example. Is there a hum or any other noise that you would not normally expect?
3) If you have a DC voltmeter, check for any voltage between the speaker lines.

Update this and we'll try to narrow this down.

Protection mode

Disconnect all speaker wires from the speaker terminals of the amp. If it powers up and doesn't go into protect when you increase the settings, the wiring needs to be checked. If it still shuts down, the amp may need to be repaired.

Does it shut down or make loud noises when you move the RCA cables where they plug into the amplifier?

Denon AVR -1905 made a loud popping noise, now doesn't stay on

The output section has smoked and requires repair. The unit is not in "protect" mode. This means that the outputs are turned off to prevent additional damage to either the amp or the speakers. Expect a repair to run from $15-$40 in parts plus the local labor rate.

Turns it self off with a sparking noise in the speakers

The unit has a built in protection mode if a fault occurs in the speaker wiring. If its in protection mode the power button light will flash and display goes blank. Try disconnecting all speakers and see if it stays on, if so it could be a shorted speaker wire or bad speaker.
