How did you get your drivers and graphics? Did you install the whole package? What is the Asus model #? How much Ram do you have? I'm going to do a little research but let me know what you have.
Dave
Your system came with 512 mb ram which is probably enough but you might want to upgarde to 1GB. Your Asus model# is EAH5450 Silent/DI/1GD3((LP). It came with MSI MS-7184 motherbiard. I am going to give you Asus download link and feel you should uninstall all Asus software and utilities and download and install from Asus. Your initial install should be from Asus because the utilities can only come from Asus.
I will outline your download proceedure.
1 Select product_click on arrow on right and click on graphics card to select
2 Select series-ATI Series
3 Select model-EAH5450
Click on search. You will then be asked to enter your operating system and click search.
You will see a list and you want to click on "VGA" first. Pick the most recent one(top) and download. When done, click finish and restart. Then come back here.
Re-enter all info and get back to the drivers. You will see in the list "Utilities". Click on that.
The two things you want are Smart Doctor" and Gamer OSD.
The Smart doctor will show first in the list so pick and download that(pick "global" download. then come back again enter all info, get back to drivers and click "utilities" again. Scroll down to Gamer OSD. Pick the newest one and download. Restart after all this is done. You may want to check for windows updates as well. From here on you can update your "drivers" through AMD but it's a little tricky.
Check in Device Manager" and make sure you see your card Radeon 5450, and check programs and features for your ATI and Asus software. You should see your OSD gamer there.
Let me know how this works or if you have ant problems. Dave
Sounds like you're on your way. What I was saying was that the on board grahics are archived(old) and only has a generic driver, so, it's good you have a card to upgrade with. Install your card first, then go to the Asus link and get your downloads. You want the "VGA" (latest one), The "Smart Doctor" and the Gamer OSD. The snart doctor and the gamer only come from Asus and you have to have Asus driver to get them. After you get all that, you can uninstall the Asus graphics driver and Catalyst Control Center and download The graphics and Coontrol center from AMD. AMD"s graphics will probably be more up to date and AMD's Catalyst Control Center is 1000 times better. Go through your install and get your Asus drivers and utilities and get back with me after you see how the download works. When you do your first download, pay attention to how there are three options on the Install manager. First time you want to do "Express install" and later you will want to do a custom uninstall and custom install. Dave
Thanks so much for your replys Dave. I will try this. I will let you Know if it works.
No problem, these things can be tricky but are worth it in the graphics.
Well Dave, It looks like this graphics card just isn't compatible with the motherboard. Nothing I seem to do will let me boot up windows with the card connected to it. The only thing i have not tried is a BIOS update. I have never done this but from what i have read it seems to be some risk to your system if not done properly. It looks like I may be returning this card for another. While i consider this sort of a challenge to upgrade this old system with newer hardware, I dont want to ruin a computer in good working order for what should have been a simple graphics card install. Thanks for your help Dave. I hate to admit defeat on this, anything I am missing here?
A little late but have you disabled on board graphics? I should have thought abut this a long time ago. This card should work for you. Do you have the install cd for it and did you rub it originally? Disabling the o/b graphics might do the trick. Where are you with the downloads abd have you uninstalled prior downloads before installing new? I'll be up for a while yet.
Go to device manager and ckick on the box by "sound audio and video controllers" in the drop down you should see Asus And ATIRadeon. right click on asus and you should see "disable". If you see "enable" click on that. and exit> right click on it again and click on "properties" tab. You should see " this device is working properly"
Now right click on ATI/Radeon and if you see "enable" click on that and exit. Do this and let me know what happens. This may be a winner.
I have tried disabling the on board graphics at the beginning, even tried in BIOS setting but it doesnt allow you to do it there. It disables in device manager but again, When i power up (with card connected) I get a serious loud cpu fan (rpm maxed out im sure), and i have to power down the system. Take card out and computer boots normally. I will give this another go around tomorrow. I cant access the pc right now, but will go through all your procedures again. Yes I have the install cd its version V917 vga driver.&manuel. Should I undo everything And start with this cd before the hardware is recognized? Im a little confused now with all the installs and uninstalls ive been doing.
Get with me in the morning. What I suggest as a last effort is to uninstall all sofware, and start fresh. Install using cd, Make sure one disabled and the other disabled and if it doesn't work I'm with you. t took me probably two weeks of messing around to get mine right but I ahd to learn the hard way.
I've got exactly the same motherboard and pci express card and I'm expriencing the load fan and blank screen. Can't even get into the BIOS when the PCI Express card is in the system. Any ideas?

Thanks for the information junkydave. I will try your suggestions. To answer your previous posts, I have upgraded the ram to 2gigs I have also upgraded the power supply to 600w. To be more specific on my problem: my graphics are integrated with the motherboard Ati radeon xpress 20 ( this is listed in device manager) I have tested the card on another machine. I am trying to upgrade this older machine for a relative. I believe this card to be compatable, maybe I am wrong. It has a pci express X16 slot. My drivers are all upgraded. Are you saying I should download the asus drivers first before the card is recognized?
what lacked here,
is:
did the PC run ok before the 5450 was inserted?
did the new 5450 card allow the BIOS to work with it, VGA cable moved to it? this is first.
if not something in bios is wrong. set wrong.
modern PCs auto switch with a x16 slot new video card, (75watts or less, card, NEVER MORE)
never more means , unless upgraded to v2.2 PSU and using the new AUX pwr cable to new card.
