Question about Mantis Electric Mini Tiller/Cultivator

2 Answers

I used my mantis electric tiller for the first time today and more times than I can count, it didn't grab into the earth and came racing back on me very quickly-the earth was pretty hard but I was surprised that it was doing this. Luckily, I can still move and let go of the handle killing the engine pretty quickly but it went racing back by me a couple of times-is this common? Am I doing something wrong?

You say that it is racing back *toward* you? If it has been assembled properly it should normally be naturally pulling *away* from you, otherwise it would be impossible to control it. If it is racing toward you then it sounds to me like perhaps the motor has been mounted backwards?

You have the handles put on backwards. It should be trying to get away from you. As you hold it back it will dig.

The Mantis is a very capable digging machine. My neighbors used their gas Mantis to loosen hardpan to dig trenches for their solar power feed. We have small beds so I prefer the Mantis to the TroyBilt for tillage.

If you have an electric Mantis be careful you don't get tangled up in your power cord.

In some regions of the country hard, dry clay will be impossible to till by even a high-powered tiller, unless and until the ground has been softened by pre-wetting the soil half a day prior to tilling.

A mantis tiller is low end. It does not have the weight to do any real tilling. Granted they are all gonna be hard to control, but unless you have, a bed that is soft soil , it will not work.

Carburetor settings on Mantis tiller

Turn the carb mixture screw all the way in until it bottoms out and count the turns as you do that, then turn it out the same number of turns plus 1/2 more and see how it idles, if it runs poorly try turning it in and out slightly for best idle.

Started electric tiller for 1st time this year. It ran a few inches then stopped. Tried reset button, still won't start. Tested cord and it's good. Any suggestions?

Double check to make sure nothing is binding or blocking tines.
Unplug see if you can turn tines by hand ever so slightly. How old is the tiller? warranty? troubleshooting in owner's manual? Customer service may be helpful.

Mantis tiller qiuts after a short running time ,then cant pull the recoil rope

Anon, it sounds like you need to get your Mantis serviced. If you cant pull the recoil rope it sounds like the coil is overheating and obstructing the fly wheel.

I also have Mantis tiller for 2 years. From the very beginning I had a problems. I was referred by Mantis to the repair store and was charged $90.00 for oil drainage. The second time I was waiting for handle replacement for ~ 1 month. This tiller can't handle even little jobs and the warranty doesn't worth a dime. Maybe I will be more successful using it in my living room . I have an equipment with Briggs and Stratton engines and I never had a problem.

To me Mantis mean big advertisement and waste of money.

We purchased a mantis 2 cycle garden tiller new and have only used it 3 times. it has only been used maybe 1 hour total and now it wont start at all. what can we do to get it to start?

Empty mantis fuel tank. Remove and check spark plug. Replace with Champion CJ8Y or NGK BPM7Y if necessary. Gap is .6mm - .7mm or .024" - .028". Prepare fresh fuel/oil mixture. Add fresh fuel to tank along with 2 ounces of 100% acetone (available at walmart) - this will remove deposits inside of mantis from sitting for prolonged periods. Try to start several times. If unsuccessful let mantis sit for a while. Do this several times if necessary. Eventually it will try to start. If it will not remain started then you are successful in completing the previous section. Next you need to watch this video and do what it says. It is actually quite simple.

Starting hard

If you have difficulty with starting the Mantis Tiller (especially if it has been sitting for 6 months or more:

It is most likely you will need to service the carburetor. Today's modern fuels will, over time, gum up the carburetors and small passage-ways within the carburetor making the carburetor ineffective. A carburetor rebuild kit can be a DIY project.

You can also remove the exhaust or muffler to visually insure that the small screen (if applicable on your actual Mantis model) is clear of carbon build-up. Clean/replace and retry.

Before you rebuild your carburetor or remove the exhaust, insure that your air filter is reasonably clear. You can clean with water/soap, insure it is dry and lightly oil and replace.

Mantis has a very good customer service department that can locate your correct parts and send them inexpensively.

We have a Mantis electric cultivator that won't start. it's only a couple of years old

Electric tiller, and it will not run ?
I would check the cord that you plug into.
You must remove the plastic housing, by removing the screws.
Next look at the plug, is it in good shape, has anything been pulled out of it ?
The motor brushes should also be inspected.
Please let us know, we repair all Mantis equipment.

Yesterday it quit running after performing normally for about an hour. Now I cannot get it started. Motor turns over easily, but won't fire.

If you have the 2-cycle Mantis tiller, it uses the ECHO engine. ECHO warrants the ignition coil for life to the original purchaser. If you have VERIFIED there is no spark at the plug, grab you reciept and head for your local ECHO dealership. If you aren't sure where one is and need to locate a Servicing Dealer, click HERE.

Hope this is helpful,
