I had the same problem with my 15 year old Craftsman lawn tractor. I tried to adjust the steering travel but it gave me marginal relief for a year until the steering failed with my steering wheel spinning freely and the wheels free to go left and right. The left bias for steering indicates that the steering shaft pinion weld was shearing prior to failure.

I took the steering apart and found that the drive pinion gear was sheared off the end of the steering shaft at the weld. I replaced the shaft and sector gear to fix this issue.

This fix requires good amount of mechanical disassembly to get the replacement parts in place so you might need to go to a shop to get a mechanic to fix this if you aren't set up for this kind of fix by disconnecting the mower deck and jacking up the front end to access the steering gear assembly and steering arm links.

SOURCE: 18hp craftsman riding mower model#917.255913. won't turn left!

You need to get down on the ground and have a look at why it is not turning left. Its as simple as that. A repair will not tell why it is not turning left. Good luck.

The steering assembly your mower has is very difficult to repair. Thank God they no longer make that type. Forget about trying to tighten that screw, it won't solve your problem anyway. Believe me, you should take it to a repair shop.

How to fix the toe out problem on my 2010 craftsman lawnmower?

Your gonna have steering rods called tie rods going to each spindle (wheel). Most lawnmowers dont have threaded tie rod ends where you can unbolt it and turn it in or out to achieve perfect alighnment. If its a larger expensive tractor you will find this and its a easy fix but most likely you just have a bend in one of the tie rods or on some cheaper models there could be a plastic bushing warn out causeing play in the front end.( Being able to slightly turn wheels without steering wheel turning) I would most likely say you have a bent steering rod or two... I have a 42" craftsman tractor... when you turn all the way to left the wheels get stuck... can I adjust anything?

What happens when you turn right? Does it turn as sharp as it used to? Almost sounds like the steering gear teeth have slipped and now it is steering to far to the left. You'll have to check the steering sector gears at the bottom of the steering column.

Craftsman Lawn tractor - When turning to the left the Left front wheel turns much farther then the right front wheel does on a hard right turn. Almost perpendicular to the tractor. Busings are brand new....

I've noticed this on other Craftsman and MTD mowers. The ones with the one main steering rod from the steering wheel to the left wheel and a connecting rod from the left wheel to the right wheel. I think that since we are advised to mow in a counter-clockwise direction, they design the mowers to turn tighter towards the left. It's in the design just like you suspected.

It wont hurt to try to straighten it if you can tell where the problem is. My guess is that it is worn out and should be replaced. The big problem will be locating the parts. If the unit is 10 years old or older you might have a problem.

Steering

Look under the front between the wheels at the tie rod that connects the two wheels. It is probably bent up and should be straight. If it's bent, remove it a straighten it.
