Question about HP Compaq 6710b Notebook

3 Answers

I have a HP Compaq 6710b. i can run the laptop from the mains power supply (240vt) no problems at all. the battery meter says that it is at 100% charge but when i pull the power cord out the laptop turns off as if there is no battery at all? The battery is new (6 months old) i changed this as i thought that was the problem.

Try downloading the latest bios for the laptop, i had the same problem of windows reporting that the battery was fully charged when it was actually empty, a bios update fixed the problem

ok ran the update. problem now is everytime i restart the laptop it comes up on the screen " your bios failed to update. try again" or something like that. i have re tried 3 times and each time it does a reeboot it comes up with the same notice. by the way, i can now run off the battery for a short time but it still shuts down after a while. better than it was but not sure why its doing it.

make sure you are running the bios update for your exact model and region, i.e. if your in the states you want the bios update for the states, not the uk version and vise versa. I would also check in the bios that the bios flash write protect isnt enabled, which maybe why it is saying the bios has failed

Because your battery is new (though it is six months old), it is recommend for you to take your battery into calibration. What your battery meter said didn't match the actual charging for your battery. Of course, believe that not the quality of the laptop battery cause this phenomenon. Maybe the incorrect judgement of the BIOS result in such problem. BIOS give a wrong conclusion when your laptop has a little power, but it forced to shutdown your notebook. What you need to do is just to re-calibrate your battery. You can do it follow this, At first, boot your computer and then press "F two" to enter the Power menu. Once you enter this menu, you'll see the "Start Battery Calibration"option. Then, Press the "enter"button and implement it. The screen will pop up like this"Please plug-in an AC adapter to supply power. Now, It will recalibrate the gauge of your battery.
Of course, if you need a new battery replacement, you can visit compaq 6710b battery

Looks like a typical battery problem.
If you payed something about 40$ for your battery, it means that you have bought a cheap one with bad cells in it. They do not last longer then half a year.
The original (good ones) cost smth above 70$ and they last about 2.5 years.
I do not recommend you to reflash a BIOS, especially if you are not that familiar with the process. If the power cuts of (and your battery is dead), your PC will become a brick of plastic.
The problem is not BIOS: everything worked well and then one day just broke. Really? This is not the way how this works.
I vote for a dead battery.

i know its a bios problem, as i have the same laptop and had the exact same problem, where the battery in windows was reported as fully charged when it was actually below 10 % so windows stopped charging it , after updating the bios it allowed windows to read correctly what the state of the battery was and therefore charged the battery. I agree with what you are saying about if the power went out , but as he has already said he can actually run the laptop off the battery for a short while now. He has also got two batteries as he bought another thinking that was the problem. Anyway i agree with what you say except i dont agree its the battery here, from experience.

Yeah, I see now, my bad. You defenetely convinced me now. Never thought that BIOS is capable of such things, as from my experience simple (Ok, not that simple) circuits are used to control things like charging and discharging.

    Thanks for explanation!

My hp Compaq 6710b will not turn oh it flashes a yellow light 8 times and then goes off

I would suggest testing a new power supply on your laptop to rule that out as being the problem. This flashing light indicates a power problem on your laptop.

I have a HP/Compaq 6510b laptop computer and it will not turn on...I have the charger plugged in and the only thing happening is the green light periodically flashes...Is the battery bad?

IF the battery is bad the charge lndicator on the laptop will flash (But not periodically) it will be a constant on-off-on-off..... Best check would be to remove the battery completely and use the adapter/charger power supply only. If it still does not turn on then you either have a bad power jack connection or a more serious motherboard problem. Also is the green light flashing on the adapter/charger or is it the charge/battery indicator on the laptop?
