It sounds like you are either using too small a needle for the fabric or the tension is too tight. Check both of those - the tension first and see if that doesn't correct the problem. Another thing to check is how the machine is threaded. Make sure the thread isn't getting caught on something along the way, ie not threaded properly. Sometimes at first glance it will see to be threaded right but when you start over and thread it from the start again the problem disappears.

I have a singer 500/550 .I'm trying too sew a straight stitch ,but I'm having trouble with the tension. What's the best setting? And i can't sew with needle in the middle position. Why

500/550? wow, that an old one. have you check your timing? or the bevel gears?
what type of problems are you having with the sewing. is the thread knotting up on the back side of the fabric? is the thread just breaking? or is it just missing stitches? does the needle hit the bobbin case?
I have a 600 series and I found that if i put the tension around 2 or 3 it sews the best.
too tight the tread breaks, too lose the thread knots up on the back.
I had to change out the bevel gears and have the machine re-time to stop the miss-stitching.
also may want to check your bobbin tension.

Having difficulty with free motion machine embroidery on my Janome Mystyle 16, top thread keeps breaking. What can I do to stop the thread from breaking? Plus the stitching is very erratic, any ideas?

1. Set up for regular sewing (not embroidery).
2. Adjust the tension of the bobbin and the top thread so that you have a nice straight stitch.
3. Check your thread quality. Is it fuzzy or have small trails sticking out. No Walmart thread allowed. Only top notch embroidery thread allowed.
4. When you've been successful with the thread and tension go ahead and set up for free arm.
5. Sew free arm but remember machine has to keep up with you. If you go too fast you will be pulling the thread and probably will break the thread.
6. Your erratic stitch is caused by the speed at which you are moving the hoop. Going fast; then slow is going to make a long stitch and then a short stitch, etc.

My thread uptake lever keeps coming unthreaded. It causes stitches to be skipped and eventually the thread breaks. I have adjusted the tension, it doesn't help.

take up lever--try putting some tape on it to see if that will stop the thread from coming off.
also change the needle--make sure is the correct one for the fabric

Top thread on machine keeps breaking , sews for a while, jumps a few stitches then breaks. Seems to make one long stitch every so often. Thanks

Refer to the manual for threading and thread the machine with the presser foot up.

Make sure the bobbin is inserted so the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the proper guides.

No zig and cotton keeps breaking

Make sure you have a new sharp needle installed for both problems and sometimes you need a particular kind of needle for the fabric. Also some machines don't deal well with 100% cotton thread. For some reason it gets caught up in the machine somewhere and breaks. Gutterman and Metrosene make excellent although slightly more expensive threads. Coats and Clark thread is good too. They make an all cotton thread but it doesn't come in as many colors. If you have the old spools of cotton thread from Walmart, just use them for topstitching if you need the color. Other wise, use them for hand stitching or throw them away. One more thing that I can think of off hand, one of my machines does not like lining fabric. For some reason the thread breaks if I stitch really fast. If you have to use that thread, you may try sewing slowly. One more thing, when was the last time your machine was serviced? This can make a huge difference if it's been awhile and you use the machine a lot. Good luck. Hope any of this helps.

How do you retime a machine? My machine will miss stitches ot completely break the thread. The top thread misses a lot of stitches.
