Question about MagLite Mag-Lite& Flashlight

1 Answer

I just replaced the batteries in my 2 D LED maglite with duracell alkaline batteries and after about 5 minutes use seem to have blown the led. Torch is less than 1 year old and has had limited use. Looking at the lens there is a small amount of condensation inside this wasn't noticed till after the problem occured. Any ideas as to why led would fail after such short ese.

I would guess there is a resistor in the flashlight's circuitry which prevents the 3 volts on the batteries from blowing the LED -- perhaps this resistor is shorted.

    More info, let me know.

The resistor needs to be disconnected at one end -- if the LED is removed this should have the same effect as disconnecting one end of the resistor.

Put the probes of an ohmeter on each end of the resistor -- if it reads 0 ohms (or near zero), it is shorted.

I have a 3AA LED mini maglite with stuck batteries. The best I can tell they have not leaked. I tried freezing the unit as well as heating the barrel to no avail. Is there a way of removing the bulb...

well, I have a 3 cell mini maglite AA with a corroded battery stuck up next to the LED. I have searched but not found a way to remove the LED to push out the battery with a dowel. The best solution I read about was to drill a hole in the battery and insert a large screw and pull it all out.
(My Maglite is from 2009 or 2010, but I think they made this model in 2011, 2012 and 2013- this is for SEO!)

Is there a rear cap on a mini maglite. I am

Yes there is a cap. I had the same problem most likely the battery inside has corroded and leaked fusing the cap shut, contact MagLite at www.maglite.com if there were either Duracell, Eveready or Ray-O-Vac batteries in there they will replace it for free under warranty.

A cell (Duracell D) has got stuck in the barrell of my 3 D cell torch. All efforts to pry it loose with a sharp intrument have failed.

Most likely the Duracell Battery in there is corroded and had fused itself to the inner aluminum wall of the light. MagLite warranties their flashlight if damage from a battery was caused by either a Duracell, Ever-ready or Ray-O-Vac battery. Same thing happened to me, I brought it to their Repair Center in Ontario, CA and they tried to remove the battery while I waited, they couldn't remove it so the gave me a brand new flashlight. They are real good about backing up their product. www.maglite.com You can call them at

I have a five D cell Maglite. Seems to always

There are diffferent mag lite bulbs made for different amounts of batteries. Be sure that you have the 5 cell light bulb. Also try to keep your fingers off the glass. if you get any oils on it, wipe it off before turning it on.
Also you can get mag lite specific bulbs...they cost more but they're worth it.

Minimag LED shuts off

Hi,

First question is what type of batteries have you been using.. A fault was found by Petzl a last year that identified a problem with using certain rechargeable batteries or lithium batteries in LED lights. The problem was that the batteries have a higher output than normal batteries and the heat created was damaging the LED's, shortening their life and in a couple of cases causing burning. Petzl have fixed the problem in their models and sent out warnings to outdoor stores to warn of the problem but I don't think that has spread too far across the industry..

Hope this helps..

How do you change the bulb in a mini maglite?

Carefully.....

Check in the base of the torch and you will see the spare bulb. you need to pull the spring out to get at it.
Next unscrew the top off the torch to expose the bulb.
The bulb is easily removed by gently pulling straight out. Replace the new bulb in the same way, lining the two pins up with the holes (doesn't matter which way round) and wipe the bulb clean of any finger grease etc.
Screw the top back on and replace the spring in the base before screwing the base back on..
Replacement bulbs, and all other parts for that matter, are easily sourced at any good outdoor store that stocks MAG.

Hope this helps..

My duracell crank light 3 in 1 is not working properly. I rotated crank handle for about a minute or 2 long, thinking that charging would be enough and led torch will light for few minutes during power cut...

I found with my Duracell crank lights they periodically need a good charge to function well. On the side there is a 5v charger socket - suggest and 8-10 hr charge. There is also a USB with a switch between IN and OUT. With a suitable USB cable in the IN position, the light can be connected to a computer to recharge. Hope this helps.

Maglite LED. Light switch is intermittent. Have had the same issue with my 8 month old 2AA LED Maglite, don't have receipt and have tried finding a solution to get it fixed again. Lost my temper with it...

Hi,

Unfortunately not, I've seen more and more of these coming back to the shop here with faults. Mostly they seem to be connection problems like yours.
Pity, MAG are excellent and have really tarnished their reputation with this LED gimmick. A lot of the customers who return their LED's to us take a traditional MAG as a replacement..
