Depending or whether your trying to connect it wirelessly or wired you will need a xbox live compatible router or wireless router(gateway).

to connect it wired you will just need to connect an ethernet cable to the Xbox

If your trying to connect it wirelessly you will need to use a wireless xbox adapter and a wireless router.

Get yourself a pair of homeplugs.

Connect 1 homeplug next to your modem and connect it to the modem. Then connect the other one to your xbox and you should get your network working to it.

I cant set up xbox live

Connect to the Internet The first step is to connect your Xbox 360 console to your Internet connection. Here's how:

etherintorouter_300px.jpg
  1. Plug one end of a network cable into a port on your router or gateway. You might need a long network cable, depending upon on the location of your router or modem.

Note If you do not have a router, you can plug the network cable directly into your modem.
  2. Plug the other end of the network cable into the back of your console.
Verify your setup Your setup should look similar to one of the following:

Router connection

Wont let xbox live update i checked connection and it was fine

If your Xbox 360 console is connected to the Internet through a router or gateway (as opposed to through a direct modem connection), try connecting the console directly to the modem. Here's how:

  1. Plug one end of a network cable into the back of your Xbox 360 console and the other end into your modem.
  2. On the console, sign in to Xbox LIVE and start the game.
  3. Choose to download the game update.

If you can download game updates when the Xbox 360 console is connected directly to the modem, there might be a problem with your router or gateway configuration.

Cheers!!

Connect the ethernet directly from the modem to the xbox. You will not be able to use the PC while playing the xbox. You will need a long wire or just move the modem closer to xbox.

Make sure your modem or router is compatible with XBOX. I think Microsoft has a lost of working modems and routers. If this is all clear, connect the eth.cable to the modem/router. Power up the modem FIRST then the xbox. All this without any cd/dvd in the tray.
Usually as simple as that...

Router to connect or sub the speedstream 5100

Option 1 (easy)
you could buy a switch or router and put in line with your modem.
you will have to set up appropriate networking on the xbox
DSL --> MODEM --> SWITCH <-- PC
^---- XBOX

Option 2 (harder)
you could get a wired/wireless AP (Access Point) for your PC and run ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) through Windows. connect the XBOX through your PC

Help connecting to XBOX Live

If the modem is not connected to a computer, you have no need for a router. Try restarting the modem with the XBOX connected, that might do it.
